Library music sounds like elevator music, but for libraries
instead. Try put on BOC's Magic Window. Always a blast! It's
on Warp, btw.

lazy_title, mostly italian lp's.

library music is stock music. to be used in the background
on TV shows, films, adverts etc. most of the tracks are
written to convey a specific emotion on sensation. there was
a lot of excellent experimental electronica written in the
60s and 70s on these labels (most of which were based in
europe) and a lot of great session music too. most of it,
however, was not generally released. most of the soundtrack
to the original Dawn of the Dead is library music.

theres a nice book about the graphic design of library music
covers called the music library which comes f\with an awesome
free cd of examples.

a silent vigil is being held...

do you think theres any market for starting a library music
label these days? not necessarily in the sense of licensing
to media like in the old days but in doing that kind of
stuff but releasing it to the public.

goblin composed the soundtrack to dawn of the dead, no?
excellent stuff anyway. don't think there is any reason for
library music anymore, it'd be nice, but most directors just
prefer to use some popular tripe to soundtrack the movie. to
be honest, i'm happy with the stuff from the 60s/70s and
could spend a lifetime listening to it :D. check out this
label lazy_link the compilations are ace.

Goblin did some tracks that were the main score.

There is a second soundtrack here which is all the
incidental music in the film. all the stuff heard in the
shops in the mall and the incidental cues and whatnot which
is all library music. Its fucking brilliant.

Do u mean that music used to be played in libraries? That
sounds incredibly retarded.

en fait c'est de l'illustration musicale, de la bande
sonore, des ziks à jingle des 60s-70s pour la télé, des
pubs voire le ciné des trucs un peu kitchos mais parfois
trés bons (rien à voir avec de la musique de
bibliothèques)

let's hope this label plan on doing a few
reissues, but for the most part, i think you have to do a
bit of crate digging and ebay sniping to get the records you
want

the nugget series on lo recordings is a great source for
library musics

There are still literally hundreds of library music labels.
I've got at least 20 CDs from the past 2/3 years from
various labels at my parents' house. I will fav+ this and if
I remember, bump this and post some once I've picked them
up.

Why on earth would they be dying out? There's more TV than
ever and tv programs/films (dramas in particularly) are
using it for a greater percentage of the running time than
ever before: Try sampling some vocals from a modern TV
drama- a good dramatic line will almost always have backing
music behind it. If it's not something recognisable, chances
are it's library music.

I find most library music pretty dull. Some of the older
stuff from the 70s, like that Vibert compilation are good,
but most modern stuff, listened to on its own (IE without
the tv program images/dialogue to distract you) is very
weak. It's still a lot of electronic music (although wanky
modern orchestral stuff quite clearly done with shit
soundbanks/multisample VSTs is also popular). It tends to be
a lot less experimental than the old film score stuff.
Nowadays it's "play it safe" SAW2 synth solo ripoffs and
poor generic techno (used in drug/club scenes in dramas with
budgets to low to licence "proper" dance tracks), usually
worse than most homemade stuff posted here.

The classics are worth checking out though:
Dawn of the Dead

There was also a 7" out recently (can't remember it/find it
now, mind) that had remixes of a couple of classic library
music tracks too. I think one was by goblin, the other by
some band called something like Xenyx.

If you're just after soundtracks, rather than specifically
library music, this is rightly considered a classic:
Assault on Precinct 13. I personally rate The Dust Brother's - Fight
Club Soundtrack highly too.

Do you mean actual 'labels,' or just companies that produce
such music? I personally like the Aircraft Music library
and Manchester music library, but Ceri's right, there's
billions of them out there. Just do some diggin'. And no,
it's not dying out exactly, it still lives on in the hearts
of a few of us.. ;)

Ahh, after browsing that site a little it looks more like
you're talking about library music that's already been
placed into a movie/tv show/whatever or soundtracks
associated with established releases. I thought you were
referring those $400 unlicensed CD box sets.. my bad!

Yes, that's what I thought he meant. Technically, once it
has been used in a film and becomes associated with that
film, surely it constitutes a "soundtrack" rather than
library music?

that link was just to give combo some kind of idea of what
library music was. i was just asking if labels were still
producing. i see your point about more TV then ever i
thought a lot of stuff was just done by an in house staff
but i guess that would really only apply to the BBC.

assault on precinct thirteen is an awesome soundtrack as
well.

ceri if you do end up posting some or sharing anything on
soulseek id be much obliged. im going to start transfering
vinyls on to my computer soon so ill keep you updated as
well if im sharing anything of interest. im enjoying
'Infini' on musique pour l'image at the moment.

and yes once it has been used in a film it is a soundtrack,
i wasnt really asking about soundtracks but im not a very
coherent person.

also the dust brothers fight club score is immense. great
album!
