Hell, I don't even know if that genre terminology is appropriate. I don't care, though, you guys know what I mean - stuff we talked about back in the day on .nu, and xltronic's early days.
Anyway, I've been exploring other genres for the past couple of years, and was looking to hear some of the premier artists of the genre now, to see what it's up to, or what my favorite artists are doing.
I mean, I heard parts of AFX's analord series, and SP's Hello Everything, and Snares puts out a release every Tuesday, but what are some newer names? Anything big in '06?
I probably missed out on all the "LAST LIST OF 06" kind of threads, but since, oh, 2003 or so, I haven't been following the labels and artists I used to.
Thanks in advance.

i'd say there wasn't anyone new in the idm scene worth mentioning in the past couple of years. the only decent albums are made by people you already know..though im sure people disagree with me. i bet they'd point out clark or some other generic stuff like that :)

yeah, i wanted to say clark. but then i figured he's already a well known and not new artist :)
also, the most interesting idm of the last couple of years is the not idm music using idm influences, like jamie lidell's multiply. is four tet idm btw? he's newish. i liked trentemoller, but that's hardly idm.
nah, the best new idm is all the old stuff you didn't already know.

I got the same instant bloated feeling with that that I got with M83. First couple of times I listened I thought "Ohh, novel" (actually those two words) and then after the third time I'd rather listen to anything else just to clean the sonic smugness out of my ears, anything, Danni Minogue, a drum machine set to random, a road drill, a rubber band being twanged against my nuthatch.

There's not many certainties in this world but one I'd bet on would be that a rubber band being twanged against my nuthatch would sound prety much the same as a rubber band being twanged against your nuthatch.
We can of course, in the interests of science, each do out own recording and compare (I solemnly swear not to pitch shift mine down, giving the false impression of Monster Bollocks).

I think Untilted was possibly the last great electronica album, before finally the term becomes utterly meaningless as all music becomes... electronic. Xltronic.

Well this is what I mean. It'll either all be done through computers or even if it's some guitar band they'll still have all sorts of "fucked up" effects thrown into the mix so it'll all become some sonic soup where the cutting edge becomes the hackneyed effect and oooh, they're experimenting (again) with fucky rhythms.
I know it's human nature to "show off" and all things eventually become JAZZ, but it's not something I enjoy having pushed into my ears.

you should listen to BABATUNDE OLATUNJI
it's this real mental west african music. weird stuff going on all over the place but it's all performed by human hands. you get weird sound augmentations, strange patterns, strange pattern augmentations, weird crescendo's that dont really make much sense, and its repetitive as hell - but it's all just people - humans.
i might also suggest taking valium and listening to some of my music it's really not all that bad

I will seek out Babatunde Olatunji. I don't doubt your music's very good, it's just I'm not, nor ever were, a fan of "beats" for themselves, and certainly not to the extent of some psuedo science. I'm not a studio technician so how one snare sound compares against a billion other sampled or designed sounds doesn't remotely interest me. The best pop music is the result of happy accidents, not meticulous attention to detail. EVEN if meticulous attention to detail has been paid that's no guarantee of success, it's what clicks. As opposed to just listening to clicks. When I write too much here it's because the thing I should be doing is really boring.

its so sad to me, everything that was interesting about this style of music has been watered down and bastardized so much that hardly anything sounds original. I guess I cant complain tho, im guilty of using vst shamelessly and whatnot.
On a side note, I noticed we both donated music to planear records back in the day, Mr Dog Belch, do you still have the track you sent? If so may I hear it?

I second Mr76ix!
And I don't second the "idm-prime is dead" statement. IDM's old 'prime' is basicly current IDM's 'prime'. Not much has changed, artist-wise, superficially. There are no new superstars, but who wants to be an idm-superstar anyways. The peer-group consists mainly of moaning and downloading kids with no money.
