NOT TRYING to start some political debate but seeing the report of his execution seems unreal.
This has to be the biggest event that has taken place during my life and probably will stay that way.

I don't feel good hearing anyone has been executed, for any reason.
The death penalty is just one more cultural bump in the road to the currency and border free science and space exploration driven Star Trek utopia that will hopefully one day be our future. Live Long and Prosper.

this afternoon i witnessed CNN's dull cable news explaining what happens when a person is hung in fairly graphic detail, i guess to kill time before saddam died. the funny/weird part was when they segued into their next story that had nothing to do with it and it was all cheery. fuck.

BIGGEST EVENT OF YOUR LIFE??? Man, the american government and media must have made you believe that Saddam is the evilest devil and this is a victory in a crusade. Because it seems unreal for me that a New Jersey's american feels that good for a capital punishment, ending an coward, unfair and ilicit war to give muslins the light of our crap democracy.

saddam's death changes little - it doesn't get our dumb asses out of Iraq and it certainly won't stop Islamic groups from killing each other. Besides, aren't there several other dictators out there (Obiang, Jong Il, and whoever is running Sudan) who will likely never see trial?

I don't know, maybe it's just me, but how can anyone say this is wrong? It's almost like you're saying "Ahh, poor Sadam!" Bah, he deserved everything he got and more. Would you say it was wrong if Hitler was caught and executed?
I understand the reasons why people argue against the death penalty, but I dunno, when we're talking a political leader of a country who probably killed hundreds of thousands or even millions of people what punishment besides execution could be given to fit the crime?

Yep, I totally agree. I can see how even someone who is normally vehemently against capital punishment for people "only" guilty of things like rape and murder to be in favour of it for genocide.
marlowe, just out of interest (and I'm not criticising your dislike of capital punishment, I really am interested in your viewpoint) what would you propose as an alternative for him? In a normal prison, Saddam would be killed by some of the other inmates unless he was in solitary constantly. I think a life sentence in solitary (when life really does mean life) is actually crueler than the death sentence to the prisoner.
I know if I was in prison for life with no chance of release, I'd like to be able to choose to be killed instead.

The problem I have is that it isn't really "justice", more revenge. They should have shot him when he emerged from that little hole in the ground.
The details about the trial are laughable really, but it doesn't matter. Everyone knew they would hang him. They could have shot him when they caught him and saved a lot of time, money, hassle and propaganda...but hey, I guess they know what they're upto.

This is fucking disgusting. There was no fair trial. This was just a man put out to death. He was a soldier and should have been allowed to die with dignity and honour by having a fight with a Klingon.

I don't think the proper punishment for killing is to be killed. Plus, his death will be seen as martyrdom by probably many moslems. Plus it's inhumane to execute a person anyway.
If a person's found guilty of a murderous (or genocidal) offence, then life imprisonment is obviously the punishment to be meted out. It's speculation to say that he would be murdered in prison, and a risk any prisoner takes, especially those convicted of more heinous offences. And he would hardly have been shipped off to Wormword Scrubs, or any 'normal' prison.
Execution is never the answer, and future generations will be ashamed to learn that it was once practised.
To paraphrase MLK, an eye for an eye leads to a world of blindness.
Revenge is a dish best left unserved.

"An eye for an eye" is probably the most MIS-quoted thing ever. In the bible it encourages people NOT to take an eye for an eye. Drives me mad when people use it to justify things. Also isn't there a commandment saying "thou shalt not kill"?
I'm gunna KILL the next person who says "an eye for an eye" ;)

you mentioned "an eye for an eye" from MLK, and I guessed it wouldn't be long before someone cited the bible or something. I dunno. I've been drinking and hmmm yes.
I wasn't actually having a go at anyone on here as such, just the general idiots of the 'free world©' who legitimise their decisions using the bible as some sort of cover-all blanket excuse.
It's a bit late to kill him now anyway. After the first gulf war would have perhaps been better (?) doing it now is a bit pointless, unless he had some mad mole based WMD in that hole he was in FFS.
