What is your biggest phobia?

Mine is heights. Ladders, egdes of buildings and cliffs, and
walking down stairs holding something that obstructs the
view of my feet are things that I cannot deal with.

I have no problems with Planes, or Rollercoasters though. If
theres any kind of "safety device" I'm usually fine.

I would rather sky dive with a parachute, then walk to the
very edge of a building that had no guard rail for instance.
I probably couldnt even come 4 feet from the edge without
breaking into a full on panic.

The funny thing is I never had this problem as a child. It
developed in my early teens and now at 22 I get worked up
even watching people navigate heights in a movie.

Apart from the part about not having it as a kid, i feel
EXACTLY the same as you.

It was almost like reading what i would have written about
my fear of heights.

I don't have a problem with planes or rollercoasters either.

I agree with the skydiving thing.

I remember a photoshopped image of a foot on the edge of a
skydiver, and it sent shivers down my spine. I really felt
bad watching that... a fucking picture!!!

Yes, I expected Fear of Heights would be the most common,
and most well justifiable fear.

I just have this mechanism that makes me loose my center
balance near a drop off. I could be standing 15 feet away
and still all of a sudden feel like I'm going to fall right
there on the spot.

The question becomes: is this mechanism a byproduct of my
fear of heighs? as in: Do I loose my balance around them so
easily BECAUSE I'm afriad of heights?

Or is the fear itself only my mind's natural defense because
I'm prone to loosing my balance, as in the fear is
safeguarding me from doing so?

Beeing high makes your eyes unable to calculate the distance
to the floor, that's what affects your sense of equilibrium
making you loose balance.

they'll throw themselves off.

my dads friend has this place, some apartment/studio in the
city, where you can easily go on the roof. and on the roof
theres no railings or anything. and ive stood on the edge
and you just look down and see the alley way all the way
down.
i wouldnt really say i have a fear of heights, but as if
anywould wouldnt be shit scared??

i do somewhat have a fear of spiders. its kinda eased off,
but today i spent alot of time reading wikipedia on
different spiders and by the end of it i felt uncomfortable
resting my feet on the ground.

I'm terrified of wasps.

Not really a phobia, but something that disgusts me - when
you get on a bus and sit down and the seat has been warmed
up by someone elses fat arse. GROSS. I know it's not really
a phobia, just thought I'd put it out there...

I used to be afraid of heights. Then, I went down south and
worked on a tallship of all things, and eventually became
the climbing instructor. I found that when I had something
to focus on, I didn't worry about being high up.

Cardiac shit creeps me out, I have a fast resting-heartrate
and all that and I always worry about dropping dead. I'm
probably more scared than I need to be because I have good
blood pressure and cholesterol and everything and my doctors
never mention it, but I'm POSITIVE I'M GOING TO DIE SOON.

wasps and bees, basicly anything that flies and annoys you
and can sting with great pain, not flies.

I love spiders though

Dooropenings, i always lower my head because i'm affraid
i'll hit my head against it, however this ain't really a
phobia, it's something i do all my life.

Watermelons, since i ate a overripe one couple of months
ago, and it tasted like them fluoride pastes they serve you
at the dentist

I worry about the same thing.. I have a high blood pressure
and I keep measuring my pulse, etc etc

however, I don't think anything of what people have
described thus far is a phobia.. phobias are heavy
debilitating things.. fear of heights is normal and the
anxiety facing the abyss is more or less equally present in
all of us (and that you haven't developed it until lately
just means that you're more aware of yourself as able to
fuck it all and throw yourself off, I think). Worrying about
dying of disease or just any random event that you can't
control is also quite normal.

A phobia is heavier. It's also a bit irrational, I think...

I used to have agoraphobia, not just "ooh, isn't it awful
out?" but actual, agoraphobia and panic disorder. I still do
but I'm so tired of it I am able to largely ignore it now. I
never speak to anyone and actively shun any needless
interaction so I've got some social phobias. And of course
Phobiazero, is my number one hero.

Yeah I don't really think I have cardiophobia or
whathaveyou, I just like to list what scares me in these
topics. It's exacerbated right now because I'm on meds that
get my heartrate even higher and give me what feel like
heart palpitations.

Agoraphobia is something I may have legit and has a tangibly
negative effect on my life. At one point I couldn't even
bring myself to walk into my classrooms and I'd just go off
to the library and read by myself for the period, ended up
failing a bunch of classes.

Well, that sounds like anxiety disorder, especially paying
morbid interest to your heartrate, says Dr dog_belch.

spiders are scary, there's nothing irrational about it

I'm affraid of people, especially outgoing people, but
that's because they're scary

if you worry about your heart, just make sure you walk at
least half an hour each day (you can split it up, but no
shorter than 3x 10 minutes). It also helps if you cut back
on salt (If I'm making anything and the recipe says "one
teaspoon salt" or something I just skip it; you can't taste
the difference anyway), eggs and butter. Use oils when
frying and eat a bit more fish.. alternatively just buy some
of those omega3 pills or something.

I notice I don't have any fear of people and I get in touch
with people easily, but if I say something during a lecture,
ask a question or something, something happens.. I'm not
afraid of anyone or anything, but I feel my heartbeat rising
for some weird reason.. I can speak in public and I can even
sing on a stage, but asking questions in a lecture.. I think
there may be something fishy going on. For that reason and
the fact that I hate people who ask questions during
the lecture (99% of the questions asked are completely
stupid or something you know the lecturer is going to
get to in a bit (why do these people not see this?)), I
don't ask questions during lectures. I just ask the lecturer
after (unless he answered the question in the normal course
of the lecture, which he usually does).

I know of a girl who did that (she couldn't go to her
classes because of some anxiety) but she's also a
stripper...so I don't get it. She's too afraid to sit in a
classroom anonymously, but getting naked in front of people
that might very well rape her if she isn't careful is just
fine.

for you to have a spider phobia, I think you'd have to fall
into fetus position every night and take lots of precautions
to avoid having spiders crawl into your mouth at night while
you sleep or something... that's the irrational bit. Even
though spiders often do crawl into your mouth while
you sleep.. and lay eggs behind your eyes.

oh yeah, speaking of fear of spiders, when i was a kid, we
had this cubby house, and the older i got, the less i went
in there. and after a while the whole place was just covered
with red back spiders.
being afraid of this is completely rational, because it was

I think I have a phobia of having no phobias, but if I do

phobias, thus making me have a phobia, which would make me
not have the phobia of having no phobias anymore.

a phobia where you rapidly alternate between these two
phobias:
*fear of everything except self
*fear of self and nothing else

Smoke would start coming out of your nostrils and you'd jolt
in a random direction every once in awhile and always blink
your eyelids out of sync and have no ability to focus on
anything.
