Worth the credit they get for being "influential in the
development of heavy metal rock music"?

One of my top 10-15 favorite bands ever probably. And I love
how creatively reckless they were, it's not like they were
just pumping out a bunch of heavy riff-rockers. There's a
lot of eclectic goofy gobbledygook on the Ozzy-era albums.

(of course first and foremost they rocked)

you can't diss on those first 3 albums
it's pointless

can't argue with that avatar

the thing is I really like them, at least when they had ozzy
with them, but I wasn't around back then to witness whether
they really were pioneering in that genre at the time. i
guess i could read up about it, but i just want to know
everyone's feelings.

There were jillions of heavy amplified blues white-dude
riff-based bands back then, and many predated Sabbath but
Sabbath have aged a lot better than pretty much all of them,
they're definitely worthy of the hype. Of course they didn't
just pull heavy metal out of their thin air or anything.
They didn't ''invent it''.

according to some, they are the inventor of the heavy metal
riff, as it were.

I wouldn't know, myself.

yeah, but they're pretty fuckin awesome

i like them more everytime i listen to tracks like "a
national acrobat" and "war pigs." better than anything
released in the last 10 years by far.

Definitely not, stuff like ''invented this or that'' is
pretty dubious, they werne't making music in a vacuum. I've
heard plenty of heavy late 60s rock (Sabbath's recorded
their debut in late '69) and there was tons of similarly
heavy riffs being thrown around, there was nothing on their
self-titled or Paranoid that hadn't been done before.

But they did it better and were a little bit heavier and the
Goth thing was big so they should be commended \M/

A National Acrobat is a great underrated tune.

Symptom of the Universe I think is their peak. Just awesome,
like everything that had come before taken to the next
logical level.

You ever listen to Electric Wizard? ''Funeralopolis'' might
be my favorite Sabbathy track ever, heavy as shit, really
similar sound to Master of Reality. There's lots of great
latter day carriers of the Sabbath torch.

i think i've heard of them, but i've never listened to them.
What's a good album to sample?

Dopethrone, which contains the aforementioned
Funeralopolis.

And Heaven and Hell is objectively awesome. But some of the
worst CDs I ever bought had ''Black Sabbath'' written on the
cover. The post-Ozzy years are hit and miss crazy style,
gots to be careful but there's some gems.

so i saw the new iron man film the other day and decided to
dig out my copy of 'paranoid' ...good stuff. i like it when
they sound like the end of the world, them really low, slow,
heavy notes.
