Hell yeah Okami is well worth getting. I would say it's
right up there with Gears of War/Zelda for 2006 GOTY. It's
just like Shadow of the Colossus in that the art carries the
experience moreso than the gameplay (which is solid anyway).
SOTC and Okami are definitely proof that games can be good
art. Still a young medium, so who knows...

Does anyone else here feel that atmosphere is actually more
important than game mechanics in some way? Most of my
favorite games-Super Mario World, Little Big Adventure, Rez,
Outcast, Broken Sword, the Zeldas, etc.-have great
atmospheres and great gameplay. Games like Unreal (the
original), Silent Hill2, Broken Sword, and lots of old
obscure action/adventure games, however, have been done far
better in terms of gameplay mechanics, but I still find them
so much more involving. I mean, Unreal 1, for example, has a
lot less to it in terms of gameplay compared to most modern
shooters, but nothing has come close in terms of enjoyment
for me because none of them have that same brilliant,
lonely, alien atmosphere. Silent Hill 2 is marvellous, but
you've got to admit that the combat was clumsy, the controls
fairly awkward, and some of the other gameplays elements
deeply flawed. The atmosphere made it for me, though.

I'm kind of the same way. I don't really care so much about
high scores or unlockables or online multiplayer or
anything, I suppose I'm more in it for the ''virtual
worlds''. Atmosphere and story and environments and whatnot.
Seeing the sights is more important to me than the actual
gameplay in most instances.

But I'll still get wrapped up in ''video-gamey'' stuff, like
I did in FF12, getting really addicted to gaining levels and
completing arbitrary quests. But for me, yeah, it's the
Silent Hill 2s and Half Lifes and Metal Gears that really
keep me coming back, the memorable ''experiences''. I hate
artless shit like Quake.

atmosphere definitely improves a good game. except of
course, there are a lot of things which make a good game,
and there are also a lot of different types of games out
there. so for me, i wouldn't say a good game needs good
atmosphere, but good atmosphere definitely can make for some
good game playing.

and ophecks, thanks for the reply. i'll definitely check it
out when it comes out (as much as im looking forward to
this, still feels kinda silly hanging out for a ps2 game
among all this next/current gen'.. um.. bonanza!) hah, i
also wanna check out that we love katamari but i feel i'm
leaving it for too late.

Well, generigames like Quake 4 anyway. I have good nostalgic
memories of some of the older installments.

PS2 has some great shit coming out, better than PS3. I just
recently watched the new videos of God of War 2 and it looks
better than anything on PS3, Wii or 360.

ahhhh. god of war is actually the other game im really wanna
get besides okami. i was browsing gamespot one day and just
wrote down all these games with good reviews or games that
seemed interesting and ive only got a few games here and
there.
judging by the reviews, it seems god of war should be a
great game, and yet i haven't even made an effort to play it
yet : |
SOON SOON!

different it is besides the late dates) but maaan, what a
crappy way to introduce a new console!! there really is shit
all on it. though, i like my playstation and by all means am
not slagging it off. not yet anyway.

Anyone played Resident Evil 4?

I have it on the Playstation 2.

Great game.

And it's quite lenghty too. About 25-30 hours long.

I played it on my GC two years ago, it's one the best games
ever made imo. Many other xlters think it's a great game as
well.

God of War is glorious.

I don't play many games, but this one is excellent. Has a
very unique atmosphere as well.

Maybe the finest videogame ever made. Even with the stupid
cutscenes and script.

And yeah the game is a very generous length... I couldn't
believe how long it was after I beat it and saw the
gameclock... never dragged even for a second, felt like a 10
hour game.

I loved NHL 99. It's not considered one of the better games
in the series but I think I played 99 for PS1 more than any
other NHL game after NHL 94. Some of the menu music was
awesome.

NHL 94 for Genesis is probably my most-played game ever.

i don't like the ea nhl franchise anymore. they went
towards the more "cartoon-ish" aspect of a hockey videogame,
where as sega's 2k series is a lot better in the realism
dept. imo.

Nintendo 64 was the last console I really got into. I still
think the controllers are the best yet for first-person
action games and sports. Great memories of Fifa Soccer,
Zelda, Waverace, Starfox, Goldeneye, etc. Had to buy an
add-on to play multi-player Perfect Dark so ended up buying
a cheap 3rd party one that was bright yellow and overheated
and froze. Loser had to re-balance fan on top of system.
Wonder if you also have to blow into the cartridges now.

XBOX controllers are retarded in comparison. Tried to play
Halo recently with my younger brother. I finally felt how
the grown-ups must have felt. The CIA and Pentagon watches
when you play. Nothanks for me.

xboxs controller definitely took their time to feel right
for me. and i dont even have an xbox this is just from
constant games at friends places. i was kinda worried when i
saw the original boomerang ps3 controller, not so much
because it was different and odd looking, but because i've
become so used to the playstation controller and its one of
my favourites along with the snes controller.
is this enough game talk for me?..

I meant to say that games have finally gotten too
complicated for me. In the future, controllers will be a
thing of the past.

Well, the wii controller is getting there and I suppose the
eyetoy is there already, if you really dislike controllers.

I think the n64 controller was great for certain types of
game, but it is pretty flimsy (broken analogue sticks
anyone?) and not really suited to car/bike games as there
aren't a pair of analogue triggers.

offline pigster from melbs on 2007-01-19 03:13 [#02034319]

yes yes. i had two controllers, one of them broke because of
the poorly designed joystick, the other was somewhat the
same reason, but i had a friend who would sweat alot and
actually managed to break the controller in quite a weird
way.. joysticks broken and the plastics all sticky and
gritty.
then we got a new see through controller and i dont know if
they improved them or what but ive used it heaps and it
still works perfectly.
