I woke up this morning and started playing, now I'm about
to go to bed and I haven't stopped playing except to bring
back sustenance. I think this is my first ever full day
gaming session, actually. Women want me and men want to be
me.

Anybody playing this/where are you/do u liek?

FF8 all over again, what's he mean by that? And FF8 is my
second favorite FF, after 6!

But this is FF8's reversed mirror image, for me, a totally
different kind of appeal. I loved FF8's characters and
story, but wasn't a fan of the weird gameplay. I'm lukewarm
towards FF12's story and characters, and can't get enough of
the gameplay. I've logged like 50 hours and have barely
dented the main story, I've been consumed by sidequests and
''hunts''.

Both games have two of the better ''worlds'' in the series.
Very colorful. FF12 feels very bustling and organic.

+
beautiful graphics, art, and world
I love the ''real-time'' battle system
gigantic, far bigger than the puny and cramped FFX
quite challenging
billions of sidequests and miscellaneous activities
Fran has a really sexy accent

-
pretty ho-hum story and a lame androgynous lead character
(as usual)
a little TOO challenging at times. Probably. I'm massively
overlevelled though. Some of the optional ''uber-bosses''
and hardcore sidequests are pissing me off.
worst FF soundtrack ever, devoid of personality and
eclecticism

Flawed but awesome and seems optimized for maximum
addictiveness. I mean, I know I'm wasting my time gaining
all these levels and shit, but I can't stop, it's so
satisfying. FFX, I was just going through the motions, not
bothering to put as much effort as I'm putting into this.

VI > XIII > XII > VII > IV > V > X > IX > I > III > II
(never played XI, I hate MMORPGS)

Really am dreadfully disapointed in the soundtrack though.
There's not a single track so far that's made me want the
soundtrack. Sakimoto is talented, and I like his work with
Tactics, but that game didn't demand the kind of dynamic
range that a full-blown FF like this does. It's boring,
bring back Nobuo.

''XIII'' should have been ''VIII''. Fuck. I've yet to play
XIII, oddly enough.

Another problem could be the ''License System''. I've ended
up with three main party members that are uber, but they're
all... pretty much the same kind of character. I tend to
play RPGs like that anyway, brute force and power and
levels, so it doesn't bother me, but some people might be
irked by the lack of defined ''jobs'' or paths or whatever.
Same thing happened with FF7 and 8, anyway.

But I'm overlevelled. If I wasn't a glutton maybe my
characters could have differed a bit more had I focused them
all on different parts of the license grid and they would
have turned out differently. As it stands, I have pretty
much every license for everyone.

I've only played ff8. At the time I was about 12 years old
or so, and I had never played any video games before. I was
so addicted to it, I woke up at like 6 in the morning, out
of dreams of playing it, then I'd play it all day. I just
tried playing it again and I realize now why people hated
it, the gameplay is very unusual and tedious.

You and your friend suck at liking Final Fantasy games.

i'm in the stilshrine of miriam right now. tough
level.

Yeah that's where I am, just got access to it, I'm about 45
hours in. I've been cleaning up all the hunts I can do. And
I love the brutal gauntlets you find in places like Barheim
Pass, Lsuhu Mines, Zertinan Caverns, etc, I've been sort of
eschewing the storyline gameplay and focusing on the
optional areas and the Espers that dwell within. They're
tough. Of course this means I can kill normal bosses in
about 3 seconds, but Final Fantasy games are always really
easy with the exception of the optional shit.

what is the new battle system?

is it like in kingdom hearts where it's just too much hassle
looking for the correct menu item because there are always
enemies running around attacking you because it's a real
time battle?

28 hours here.
Of course this means I can kill normal bosses in about 3
seconds

it's the same with hunts and areas like zertinian caverns. a
suicide until you're at an adequate level. i usually leave
them to later if that's the case. i tried entering caverns
and nearly got killed by a frog. elementals still look
menacing. tried casting water on one of those at an early
stage of the game, it reflected, i ran off.

new battle system is indeed a great improvement.

and overally, a very polished, balanced game with a lot of
honest work and creativity put into it. agree on the
soundtrack though.

mastah: yeah, the bunny one

it's not THAT real-time... Kingdom Hearts was a real hassle,
I agree, especially on hard difficulty where I kept on
dying. In FF12, you are essentially "engaged" by enemies
when they appear, and from what I understand it's still more
or less a turn-based action system... Although you DO have
to literally run away, or run around, enemies if you want to
escape. Mind you, I'm just regurgitating stuff I've read.

Another thing is FF8. Many people hated it, for whatever
reason. Its gameplay mechanics had severe shortcomings,
that's for sure. The world felt like it was not so much an
interactive backdrop as a series of paintings. This, to me,
was actually simultaneously an incentive to keep on playing.
Story-wise it was really confusing, and they left too many
loose ends into the game. But, but, but... With awesome
battles and a highly exciting draw-system, solid soundtrack,
dark existential themes, varying time-lines, the best CGI
work in the series, picturesque locations etc etc, I really
ended up enjoying it, despite its flaws. It has some of the
most engrossing events and baddies in the whole series. No,
it's not as good as FF6, but what is?

FF12's battle system is a hybrid turn-based/real-time mutant
thing. You basically control one ''leader'', running around
areas full of beasties... they come after you, or you run up
and slash them, whatever. And you have two and sometimes
three computer controlled party members.

It's sort of turn based. There's still ATB meters and the
game stops while you decide what to do in the menus
(although you can make it ''active time'' like before). But
the battles play out in a way that feels and looks
real-time. Your meter builds up, you decide what to do, you
do it. Everybody else is doing it at the same time. The AI
party members are doing their own thing. You can be
attacking a bad guy while another bad guy is using a spell
on your buddies. It's fast.

At any time, you can tell your AI guys what to do anyway...
you can manage everything everybody does in every battle if
you wish. But who does? Come on, 90% of the time you're just
banging the action button when you play these games, attack
attack attack. I love sitting back and watching my AI party
members clobber generic beasties while I sit back and laugh.
When you get a boss or a mob of particularly tough
motherfuckers, it can get pretty intense and strategic and
you can and should get more involved.

Which doesn't mean you have to tediously tell everybody what
to do at any given time while the very fast paced battles
rage around you. Though you can and will manually control
everyone's actions, it's not hard. But the behaviours of
these AI party members are very customizable via the
''Gambit'' system. Hard to explain but you set them to do
certain actions depending on various situations that can and
will arise. Like, you set someone to do something like
this-

Ally-party leader / status-blind / action- eyedrops

offline Ophecks from Nova Scotia (Canada) on 2006-12-03 06:24 [#02011852]
Points: 19190 Status: Moderator | Followup to Ophecks: #02011851 | Show recordbag

or something like that, and your guy will always know that
when you get blinded, they'll fix you up. You can set up
their order of gambits so that other actions (like killing
their target before turning their attention to you) take
precedence over that one, or you can make it so that they
will drop whatever they're doing to use the eyedrops on you
right away, no matter what. Depends on how badly you think
being blinded will affect your personal gameplan. Or you can
set it so that they'll always know to use fire on a Yeti or
a ice elemental or whatever. Or have one of the guys be a
designated healer who will fix you up after every encounter,
if you need it, just like you'd normally waste time doing
yourself, very convenient. I thought this was going to be a
pain, and indeed you have to trudge through some menus to
get it all in order, but it ended up being a masterstroke.
Satisfying turning the tables on a powerful mark by having a
battleplan come together. And I like automating obvious
things I'd have to waste finger movements doing before.

The system is definitely not for everyone, but I'd
personally cringe if they ever went back. I still feel very
much in control. And beyond the gameplay aspect of it, I
like the immersion that comes with being able to see your
opponent on the field before engaging. And running away from
them and everything. I've had some funny situations where I
had to haul ass through a field full of undead guys I was no
match for or running for my life from bosses I
understimated.

I dunno, it's hard to explain, but I tried. Even moreso
since it's so customizable. I thinik you can slow the game
way down, though I've never done this, and have it play less
''real-time''. You never have to use gambits if you don't
want to.

I started playing it a few weeks ago, but I haven't touched
it since. I am about 2 hours into it, and I know all RPG's
start off slow so I should give it another chance. But that
"real time" combat method put me instantly off... the only
RPG to do real time successfully are the Namco "Tales of.."
games in my experience. But yes, I think I will go back to
it tonight and see if it can sustain my attention for a
little longer.

I hate that! I never just bang the action button in final
fantasy.. I want to use all the other stuff! That's what I
hated about kingdom hearts and star ocean; it's all just
slash slash and no tactics! I want to control each and every
one of my characters, but if everything keeps on happening
while I'm browsing some menu, that just isn't going to work
very well...

I hope I'll be able to work it somehow

so I can set some option where I control all my characters

Yeah it's up to you, pretty much just like ''active'' and
''wait'' like before. If you want total control of
everything all your guys do, you can do that, and you can
have it set so that the game WILL freeze while you decide
what you want to do, it's easy to manage. Even then it's
quite a bit faster than the old system, though you can turn
the speed of the ATB and everything way down. My battles go
by fast and I get really disoriented during huge boss
fights, which I love, but I can see why this would disturb
some and they'd want the speed down.

In some ways it's a hassle, but I find it filters out a lot
of the tedious stuff that I never enjoyed doing. I
especially like having my guys set to ''kill everything in
sight'' so I can just watch them slaughter the cannon
fodder, but it's up to you.

2 hours of any RPG is hardly sufficient, but especially this
one, I think. This is slower than most because of how it
eases you into gameplay. But if you don't like the real-time
thing, maybe it's not for you, because the combat gets
really heavy later on when you get more abilities and shit.

I hate it when I can't control the other people. They just
do stupid stuff and use all the potions (like in kingdom
hearts) and mana when they don't need to.

I usually keep active time, but I'll probably use the freeze
thing this time... Also, battles aren't supposed to be fast
unless you're fighting very inferior enemies.. the fun isn't
in bashing the x button, but rather in carefully choosing
the best tactic for defeating the enemies. Using scan,
learning about the enemies, applying proper force, etc.

See that's the thing, my guys never do stupid stuff, that's
why I like the gambit system. They never do anything I
wouldn't do. They do exactly what I'd do, and oftentimes the
battles play out fast precisely because of proper planning
and tactics and co-ordination, and I'm just bypassing the
tedious stuff and formalities and cutting to the chase. I'm
still the conductor of this symphony of destruction, I just
don't need to navigate as many menus to get the same
results.

But you don't need to mess with that if you don't want to
anyway. But you will definitely have to use ''wait'' if you
want to control everyone. I think. I can't imagine trying to
co-ordinate everyone at once while being attacked in
real-time...

It sounds good, although I never had any problems with FF
battles being slow and cumbersome. I sure hope I'll like
this one.

It's insane, I have okami and xenosaga and a bunch of other
rpgs lined up, and I never have time for all that... so how
on earth will I ever find time for this one?? Well, I guess
for this one I'll just HAVE to find time! :)
