Very average. Vaan is a lame ''lead'' character, and I'm not
overly concerned about the protagonists' plight. It's pretty
cliched and once again there's no really intimidating or
hateful villain. Hence why I've been spending so much time
on the outskirts of the story, tackling the optional stuff.

See, I like the ''world''. I like the cities, I like the
areas, I like the lands, I like the side-stories and the
little details of the world... but the main story thread
isn't anything special. But I like the gameplay so much more
than the old style that it's not a huge deal for me, this
game holds a very different appeal for me than FF8 or FF10.

The characters seemingly aren't very well fleshed out
either. There's no ''love story'' or anything, for example.
There's a couple of characters I like, but they're not deep,
they're just... er, cool?

But keep in mind I may be being premature, because even
though I've played over 50 hours, I'm not that far into the
story at all. There's some plot points I'm interested in, so
maybe things get more interesting later.

Then i wouldn't like it. ff games should be all about
characters and story.

Finally beat it this morning after 80 hours (and more to
come because my pride necessitates the slaying of the very
brutal optional bosses, one of which is supposed to be like
a multi-hour war of attrition).

Story is weird... some nice characters and lovely silly
melodrama, but the way the story plays out is awkward. You
go for many hours where nothing happens except travelling
and exploring, which is fun because the game plays well, but
it's not good for the narrative. And the sidequests seem to
be so independent from the main story thread... I dunno...
it's pretty spotty. Near the climax I felt really satisfied
by the way it all plays out, and a few things I was confused
about clicked, but I think I was only confused about them
because of how inconsistent the storytelling was, not
because of any sort of depth or mystery.

It has a definite political edge, like FF Tactics, but the
way that aspect of it intertwines with the usual ''long epic
journey for the mythical whatevers'' isn't all that smooth.
As I actually played, I did not feel like I was in the
greatly troubled world that the cutscenes portray and
describe.

And the main villain was a putz, though he has a cool
brother.

Gameplay-wise it's my favorite FF but I think it may be a
transitional installment, because there's no way I can go
back to that random battle/turn based stuff, no chance, yet
there's still some refinements to be made here and there,
both in the gameplay and the aventure template. The ''hunt''
thing that I got really addicted to requires a lot of
annoying tedious legwork, and they make up the bulk of the
sidequests. They hardly tie into the main story at all,
feels like I was playing two different quests.

The game takes some cues from Western RPGs, to mixed
results... the battle system, of course, and the dungeons
are bigger than ever but sometimes feel too big, like those
boring randomly generated Elder Scrolls layouts.

Overall, it's like every FF... flashes or brilliance and
some glaring flaws. One of the better installments in the
series, overall.

Soundtrack just fucking sucks though. I enjoy listening to
almost all the older ones, but I don't care to hear this
workmanlike wallpaper music ever again.

ff3/6 has no flaws

I think FF6 shows its age, it's as unbalanced as the rest of
them, and lacks the insane challenges that modern RPGs have
(the ones I'm working towards in FF12 right now). It's a
cakewalk but it's definitely the least flawed FF.

just picked it up today. will see how goes.

final fantasy 6 got me into the series when i was a kid. i
later tried all the games before 6 but couldn't stand them
since their stories were so bloody generic, and the random
battles bored me to tears. i enjoyed 7, 8, 9, 10 when i
played through them but i strongly doubt i could ever go
back to them and enjoy them as much as i did when i was a
teenager. anyway, i think my favourite games are 6 (for
nostalgia), 7 (for atmosphere) and 8 (for utter weirdness).
i enjoyed 10 more than other people have. couldn't stand
10-2 and it was the first final fantasy that i never beat
(excluding 1-5). never bothered with 11.

i'll go play some 12 now so i can have something
constructive to say.

holy crap is the voice acting bad. i'm not kidding *at all*
when i say that this is the worst voice acting i've ever
heard in my life. a lot of the time i don't even know what
people are saying because the lines are literally mumbled.
there is absolutely no natural flow in the delivery of the
lines. the voices themselves sound annoying. i'd like the
main characters if the voice actors didn't sound like
uneducated american brats. there is not a single instance of
decent voice acting to be found. this is just gamebreaking
for me and an incredible disappointment. i'll either return
the game or give it to some kid with no taste.

shameful.

Oh yeah, the overall voice acting... one of the few things I
didn't touch on... and can't really speak for since I had
the game muted 99% of the time to listen to music because
the soundtrack was so blah. Fran sounded cute but Vaan
sounded like he's probably annoying, and the sound quality
was jarringly compressed to fit on that one disc.

the voice acting is decent, though i'd prefer if there
wasn't any at all.

i actually like the soundtrack. it's not exactly great but i
like the atmosphere. ah well.

i think i'll do what you did and just listen to music while
i play. i'm currently torrenting the soundtracks to my
favourite final fantasies for this purpose.

now that schools out I can start my marathon of 12, anything
I should look out for while playing, sometimes FF games like
to hide stuff that you can only get at certain times.

i have no idea how to actually use quickenings (the limit
breaks) and can't find any good information on it in the
game, in the instruction manual or online. so that's
something to look into.

ophecks guy pretty much nailed it.

i was mind-numblingly addicted by the leveling up but thats
pretty much it...

i remember in that large illusion/snowy/mist area with the
spires i wasnt in the mood to think of how to navigate the
map, so i just used that as an excuse to run around
mindlessly for hours crippling every damn hopeless enemy
that my relentless maddog-killa crew would automatically
target.

i probably would have done all the side-quests but i rented
the game, and when it was due i just felt like getting it
over with, which was a fitting end since the anti-climactic
final dungeon really topped off the whole tacked on feeling
of the plotline...

aah'dno... i tried to get into it...the characters were a
little bit charming sometimes...(trevor goodchild's voice
especcially!) but the whole affair was primarily impotent.
=S

This game didn't leave the same lasting impression on me
that FF6, 7 and 8 did, or anywhere near it. Mostly because
of the weak soundtrack, lesser story and the less
interesting ''world'' (it seemed like it was going to be a
better universe than it turned out to be). But it's still a
great game and I can't wait to see this gameplay applied
again and refined. I was crazy addicted.
