Being intoxicated while being creative

I've been drinking a lot lately. A lot on a regular basis,
and a lot on weekends. I've decided to try and quite for a
month and see how it works out.

The thing is, i often have some red wine when i'm sitting
there making music. I think everything i make sounds great,
and the next day when i wake up and give it a sober listen,
i think it sounds like shit.

Also, if i smoke some hash (wich i do once in a while)
music just sounds so much better. I remember lying flat on
my back with one of my friends, listening to an AIR album,
that i didnt care that much about before, but while stoned,
it was suddenly the most beautiful thing i had ever heard.

What do you think about drinking/using drugs while being
creative/listening to music?

One one hand, i think it distorts your good judgement on
what you do. It makes things sound better than they are.

On the other hand, i have a hard time imagining Pink floyd
or the Beatles doing what they did without drug use....

the solution: be intoxicated all of the time

Are you more creative when intoxicated? Yes. But mostly when
it's weed.
But what you really have to ask yourself is; can you make
good music without being intoxicated, and is that music more
true to yourself?

...vi må lige hooke op til en lille pind engang Johannes

I once tried making music after having smoked hasj.
once.

It was shit

if I'm drunk when I make music, I make "funny" songs. songs
that mostly are shit, but "funny."

if I make music when I'm sober, I make better stuff (imo).

it's actually better making music after you smoked
weed (i'm mean, when you're on the way down) cause you're
more stoned and somehow patient - this mood is good for
ambient stuff imo

I found that there was no difference between being "high"
and being drunk neither in how I felt or acted nor in how I
performed when making music.

I'd rather make it sober.

I hear you can have good ideas while intoxicated, and can
apply them later, but if you try to make music in that
state, it almost invariably ends up being shit.

But I wouldn't know, I never tried. I've just read a lot of
artists mention this.

I'd agree that hash is a more creative substance than
alcohol. I havent made music while being high, but i draw a
lot, and i've actually made some stuff i was quite happy
about while being high.

The comic i have syndicated is made on a couple of stoned
nights.

Being drunk, if i'm with my friends it great fun to make
music in fruityloops, but its mostly a tekst to speach
machine saying something obscene over an techno track. Good
fun.

Steven: Klart! Jeg kommer bare aldrig til Ålborg, så du
må bare råbe op når du er ved de her kanter!

Also, i think my nr. 1 motivation is probably boredom. My
best stuff comes from times when i really have nothing else
to do, and have to entertain myself in some way, and at the
same time feeling ambitious.

I think it has something to do with how i was brought up. If
i said to my mom or dad "i'm bored", they would simply hand
me pen and paper and tell me to do something.

Yes, they where hippies...

hasj doesn't make you neither more creative nor, in my
experience, any calmer, than alcohol. I believe the effects
most people seem to feel as a result of smoking hasj are
socially constructed, and that you could probably get the
same result if someone had convinced you sniffing flour had
that effect on you.

dude...I seriously smoked 10 or 20 times before I actually
stopped puking (I smoked bong heavily) and learned to
control my high - that was about there I started learning
that everything sounded different in audio and that my mind
worked on a different level music-vise.

I understand what you're saying, but i disagree 100%

It's very different.

Alcohol never made me curl up in a sofa and laugh at the
thought of captain haddock for 1 1/2 hours

what are you on about?

I never puked, I just felt slightly drunk and I figured it's
way more comfortable and way tastier to just get drunk than
it is smoking hasj if I want to get stupid, so I'll keep to
my alcohol.

i came up with one of my best track ideas while pissed, so

maybe not, but that could just as well be because you have

only relate to my personal experience which tells me it's no
different from alcohol, implying that the effect isn't as
much biological as it is psychological.

drunken mastah you are so very wrong, I dont know how you
can say what you say with such conviction, your personal
experience doesnt sound very conclusive.

I never feel like making music if im heavily intoxicated but
it goes well with being a little bit intoxicated, and on the
tail-end of being very stoned is good too. generally drunk
and creative dont really go together that well.

it is precisely because I've tried it I can say it with such
conviction; I have more or less the same biology as the rest
of you, so why shouldn't it affect me the same as you? But
then it didn't.. it affected me just like alcohol does.

Like someone said, with certain psychoactives ideas flow
freely, but implementation is best left to the period after,
to the cooling down and reorientation period... As for
alcohol, it rarely gives you great ideas, mainly because
it's dumbing you down as you go along, although some addicts
(read: poets) will swear to its worth.

Drunken Mastah, I'm familiar with the social contruction
theory of intoxication effects (it has been proposed in the
case of alcohol too, and you can see Derren Brown do some
funny shit with this), and I think all mental states and
emotions can be accessed by controlled breathing, meditation
or jogging, for example. But most neophytes are at loss as
to the purported power of hash, and all too easily put it
down on suggestibility or something after a few unsuccessful
tries, whereas anybody who has experienced the states
described in the literature knows that it ain't no BS, and
it certainly ain't akin to the silly-funny-stupid antics
caused by ethanol.

ps. autechre+alcohol=killjoy

BUT, you base your whole vision of what hash is all about on
your own experience. Cool enough, but this also makes you
say that it's some kind of mass hysteria from our side.

"maybe not, but that could just as well be because you have
been told that's what happens when you smoke hasj."

I don't even feel like discussing it, because it's simply
just WRONG to make that claim.

One of these things is the problem with your hash
experience:

1: The hash was crappy. I think this is pretty likely, as it
usually is worse quality, and more expensive in Norway

2: You didnt inhale properly (Bill Clinton style)

3: Your body responds differently to Hash than humans
generally do. There is a chance of this, as different people
respond differently to different drugs.

oh, and I should probably mention that the once
applies only to my attempts to make music while under the
influence

I've smoked it a few times.. maybe five or seven so (one of
the guys I live with smokes regularly), but it never had any
particularly different effect from alcohol. thus I stopped
because it's so annoying coughing and it tastes bad.

Just because you don't get the same feelings from it, doesnt

Alcohol sometimes makes me more creative, but at the same
time makes me less focused and devoted.

BTW, when you smoke cigarettes while drinking Coke Light /
Diet Coke it tastes like hash. At least in my experience.

In English, does "weed" refer to marihuana, hash (the brown
stuff) or all forms of cannabis?

I'm not saying you don't get the feeling, I'm just
saying you're responsible for it being the way it is; hasj
doesn't seem to have some uniform effect, but rather, as
with alcohol, it makes you a bit more stupid and at the same
time a bit more "loose," allowing yourself to do the stuff
that "intoxicated people" do.

Ah, now were getting somewhere, where we might actually
agree.

Ofcourse, an high could never have an uniform effect. It's
differs from what mood you are in, certainly.

Still, there is some fundemental difference in the effect of
alcohol and hash (in my book). I often feel great, and happy
when i'm drunk, but i never had a laughing fit while drunk.
Not like when i smoke.

Actually the full story is, i'm supposed to sleep at this
party, but i just can't fall asleep. Then i go out to get
some water, and this guy is lighting up a joint. I get some
drags from it, and it's like the strongest shit ever.
I try and go back to sleep, but the mental image of captani
haddock keeps haunting me.

Then suddenly, i begin imagining a little crab coming in,
looking very angry and shouting "where are those blasted
captain haddock pills" (hvor er de forbistrede kaptajn
haddock piller"

That sentence just made it even harder to fall asleep, as i
began laughing every time i thought about it. It only made
it more funny, that a girl that was trying to sleep some
place near me kept going "shhhh!".

you already believed there would be a difference the first
time you tried it. I didn't. I believed something completely
different would happen.. I thought I'd start hallucinating
or something, but then it was just like being drunk. I guess
not producing hallucinations is a more objective
effect of hasj.

the first times i smoked weed I just felt confused and a bit
uncomfortable in my body, i suppose I can see why you might
think its like being drunk. its different after you get used
to it for some reason. and also - it does affect people in
different ways, im sure you know this! some people drink and
get violent, some people drink and go all introspective. I
guess you think this is a social effect maybe. Also - there
are plenty of very different kinds of cannabis, and cheap
hash is about the least fun or effective of all of them. it
may make you stupider but its a very different stupid

stupidity is a way of relaxing, of not having to relate to
other people as one normally would

of course, that doesn't make it a good thing, but I know I
feel like I need to unwind every once in a while and then
it's good to be stupid. the problem with being sober and
stupid is that people treat you differently, making it
harder to forget that they demand to be treated in some
particular way

produce the structure of your music while sober. sketch out
ideas when you are drinking/intoxicated. mix down your stuff

smoke and listen. prepare to be mind fucked by yourself.

a small cry for help here; since I've stopped smoking weed,
listening to music, films, and video-games seem far less
interesting. Music and films are the least affected,
although I miss how music sounded when I was high and how
films sucked me in, but I simply cannot play games anymore
withouth feeling like I'm far too old for such nonsense
(silly I know, but it is impossible to get involved.) Very
annoying. I don't want to be a slave to a plant.
