The people answering the calls probably have it worse when it comes to this unique form of torture. When I did tech support I had to listen to the same movement from Handel's Water Music almost every time I put someone on hold or had transfer someone. It was a long-term thing, emotionally scarring.

When I put someone on hold to transfer them or get them in contact with other branches, which was all the time, I often had to be put on hold too while I waited for the other branch or agent to be available. It was a really sucky system and the inexplicable music made it worse.
