Returning after 2004's redefining and revolutionary "The Greater Wrong Of The Right" ( an album that caused several bands included in the same breath as Skinny Puppy to collectively marvel at their audacious reinvention of the Industrial music genre ) the iconic Vancouver duo of Ogre ( voice ) and cEvin Key ( synthesizers / electronics / percussion ) ably assisted by Mark Walk ( and a host of others ) return with "Mythmaker" - perhaps their most ambitious and adventurous album : As dark, twisted, beautiful and aggressive as ever, Skinny Puppy take the listener on a roller coaster ride through their unique aural onslaught of Industrial, Techno and Noise. Now even more contemporary and relevant, over 20 years into their existence Skinny Puppy prove they have more bite and continue to shine brighter than ever...

Still overly dramatic and contribed. They lost it with their last album, and still haven't gotten it back.

so some little piggies have this (full) album now it seems and there's way more to it than the samples above would suggest,,
much more like skinny puppy, the chaos / spontaneity / layers etc.. much different to TGWOTR and way more ambitious with a lot more depth imo. the last album, while shiny and 'nice' sounding, never really made me feel that this was the same skinny puppy. mythmaker however does in quite a few ways, this sounds as if he could have been the 'album following the process'.
after some teething problems, i would say skinny puppy is on the right track and it makes me smile a bit.

i would say the opposite. it has much ambition, less depth, lacks a single new idea and is mastered like a damp sponge.
this album has a lot more of everything that sucked about the last album and a lot less of the few redeeming qualities. PLUS the songs are the very, very worst that either ogre or cevin key have ever written in their entire careers.
this is a horrible embarrassment of an album. skinny puppy used to be a band that changed radically on each album, and i enjoy all of their periods of musical reinvention. this has nothing to do with that - this is just BAD music. they're out of ideas or something.
worst fucking lyrics he's ever come up with too. it's like he's on a competition with bathtub shitter to use the most instances of the word "shit" in a song and he's not only not saying anything new or interesting, he's saying everything in the whiniest way possible.
i listened to the first two songs and i thought, well, this is just a bland album so far, but maybe it will get better. and then it got worse and worse. i wish i could unhear this, honestly. i wish these guys would retire again because they are just fucking up their whole legacy. they really ought to go back to their solo projects, which were actually good.

Sounds alright, something about the lack of virsitile technology that made their old stuff awesome. I don't think it was their TALENT for producing as much as it was spring reverbs and shitty sequencers (compared to tadays standards) that gave it their signature.
The new stuff ain't bad, but it sounds like it was made with pro tools and all that stuff and just sounds like everything else that comes out of a computer these days.

after first listen - it sounds not bad as an electronic/industrial album on its own - many LUSH moments, but quite poor compared to Too Dark Park which is my private fav and perfect SP album.

I heard the leak, and I think it is better than TGWTR. TGWTR seemed to me like, they had just gotten back together, it was the first SP album in almost 10 years and they wanted to keep it simple, at least in certain ways. TGWTR sounded to me like an album that had general appeal for fans of industrial music. Nothing too avant garde or experimental, just general enough for them to re-establish themselves. Smart for them, frustrating for those of us who appreciate the more artsy, avant garde side of their music.. ie Last Rights, Too Dark Park etc.
With this new album it seems like their is more emphasis on the synth work and the guitars are more mixed back. This is a big plus to me, not that I don't like guitars or even having them loud in the mix, but the presentation on TGWTR seemed a bit typical or standard for this style of music. This album also captures a lot of the new-wavieness that made pop aspects of their 80s and early 90s stuff appealing, while adding in newer forms like drum n bass.
Also, there is a Download album on the way soon. Mark Spybey is supposed to appear on at least a few tracks which is exciting.

Ogre had mentioned in an interview that this new album would would have the feel of something along the lines of early Human League

i think its pretty good, i just wish there wasnt as much vocoder and comb filtering effects, i think i even hear some autotuned ogre in there!
overall much better than the previous SP album but still in the face of everything from the PRocess and previous it doesnt not hold up.

I've heard more of this album since my last post about it, and I have to admit I am not all that hype on it. There are a few songs that are pretty good, but overall not my thing. It seems to me that The Process was kind of like Metallica's Black album, and that from that album, to the Ohgr stuff and then to these last 2 albums since their reform they are like a different band with a different MO. When they went to American to do The Process, they openly stated that they wanted to do stuff that was more commercial. Well, they did and still are. If I wanted to listen to that kind of industrial I would buy Wumpscut albums. If this is what they are into, and they feel like they are more successful than they were before, then more power to them. I will continue to buy Download albums, but I can't bring myself to purchase either of these 2 latest SP releases.

I bought the latest noise unit and probably front line assembly. They were both terrible even though noise unit drill is fantastic, and some of implode is too minus the lyrics.
