This American Life

This show is great. Its so much more powerful than
anything on TV, and the show is perfect for radio. I don't
know why its so awesome, but I absolutely love it. I might
be biased because I was pretty much raised with NPR as the
primary media in my life.

Anyway, I just started listening through the archives online
here. This show might be only recognizeable to
people in the US, but it is definitely worth checking out,
as it really has nothing to do with America in particular, I
think.

Ah ha! I knew if I had posted this exact same thread it'd
get the same response, so I didn't bother. But I'm glad you
did because this is a decent radio show. (I think they're
making it in to a cable TV show, maybe on Showtime.) Yeah,
I've been enjoying this radio program for a few years now.
It really is great, just stories, and nothing juvenile, but
for all audiences. There was a recent (a few months ago
maybe) story on there about a black man (back in the day)
who worked on a ship that wrecked and washed ashore in
Norway I think. Well, they pulled him out of the ocean and
took care of him, first trying to wash off the "oil" from
his skin. They of course never have had seen a black man
before and thinking this particular man was covered oil
tried to wash off his black skin. And this poor guy thought
he was still in America or thought that all white people had
in for blacks, kept worrying that he would be lynched. But
of course he wasn't. He was nursed back to health, soon
returning to America where he joined the armed forces in
some capacity. He went through all kinds of racism, but
instead reacting with violence he remembered those people
who had helped him and did nothing. He eventually became a
success and paid tribute to the people who had helped him by
openning a musuem there. Or something. Very touching.

But I have to say, it took awhile for me to get used to
Ira's voice.

As far as being raised on NPR, me too. Not that my parents
had anything to do with it. I just caught on to it at a very
earily age. It usually being close to the Classical music
station on the FM dial also helped.
