The state of music today

Now that I'm at university, I feel old.

All the kids (which is what they are) listen to bands like
The Klaxons and My Chemical Romance.

What the fuck is "New Rave?"

I have no idea, but these kids love all this shit.
I played one of my housemates some Aphex Twin, he was all:

"Yeah, yeah. Not very interesting."

Does nobody under 25 listen to electronic music or dance
music in the UK anymore? Is it dead???

rattling the Halls of Residence with.

i do and im a sprightly 23. its not dead its just not
hitting the right notes with people any more. seems to me
that a lot of people want music that is upfront with its
message and musicianship, hence the popularity of bands like
my chemical romance. groups like the klaxons, CSS, hot chip
etc are still electronic in nature but still have clear
messages and a 'band sensibility'. i get the impression im
talking out of my arse sorry.

from what ive seen of my girlfriends mates.

i am a young 19 year old child-boy and i like electronic
music. however, i honestly cannot find anybody else at
university who does. there are a few drum 'n' bass heads, I
suppose, but they ONLY seem to like drum and bass, or a bit
of trance here and there. young child-boys do seem to prefer
rockish music.

dont you have any good drum and bass and i bit my lip
because i knew he meant something like pedulum and i thought
you stupid cunt go back to your skateboard

its this new wave of 'band' music that seems to like
somewhere between indie-rock and emo whatever things.. it
annoys me as people are like this is cool this is hip, but
its not. its just disposable for the moment music, that
ultimately will not stand the test of time..,.. uh, its not
comparable to groundbreaking eras of past. its nothing
special. i was digging through some old vinyl the other day
and found a track by XTC, and i thought hey, this sounds
like all that shit today, except i have more respect for a
band doing something 20 years ago what is 'hip' now. thats
clever i thought. it annoys me. and people go to 'indie'
clubs. mention warp and people will say maximo park.

Indie is the new soft rock. The kids listening to NME bands
like The Klaxons aren't the ones that would've been
listening to The Smiths 20 years ago, they're the ones that
would've been listening to Marillion or T'Pau or something.
It's totally mainstream and boring, but the fans still seem
to think it has some sort of rebellious edge.

You think the new Tool is "mainstream and boring, and that
fans just think they have some sort of rebellious
edge".....pfft. I can see you being an electronic guy, but
Tool have always challanged themselves and thier fans, and
not since teh song "sober" could they be any less
mainstream.

Yeah, see, when people try to talk to me about indie bands,
I just think of the underground rock scene of the 80's,
which they wouldn't touch - which is odd to me, because
bands like the smiths, the cure, the jesus and mary chain,
etc, did it first (and better, arguably) back in the day...

i'm a university student, and if you ask me, kids have
always been 'stupid'. people want pop music, something with
a disposably catchy tune. that's how it's always been. the
kids that pretend to listen to 'smarter' music aren't really
a notch above everybody else - i mean, in 9th grade, i
thought i knew music better than everybody else because I
listened to nine inch nails, then it was aphex twin, and
etc.

if someone tells you they 'knew about' x 'before they were
famous' just give them a big "WOW!". let them know how much
of a difference they've made. i listen to music i enjoy,
yeah, which does include a lot of top 40 bullshit, but i
only share tunes, not half-baked opinions and
self-evaluations.

for the record, i listened to my chemical romance before
anybody heard of them, but i don't tell people that - i tell
them, their first album is good. the other two are not.

the other day i had a chemical brothers t shirt on in the
pub. this kid, only a year younger than me:

him "what does it say on your shirt?"

me "the chemical brothers"

him "my chemical romance?"

me "the chemical brothers"

him "who?"

true story.

I was listening to a fruityloops loop of one bar of music
which contains one note every four steps at 10bpm. The note
is on a Wasp synth with the pitch oscillator set at maximum
level and minimum speed. So every note is different in a
"random" kinda way. So every few seconds the synth goes
"bleep" at a different pitch. Then I added a delay a 80bpm
and two reverbs turned up full on all settings. The reverb
and delay built a nice big sissonant cloud of musi-fog I
could feel wash over as I played Manic Miner for the
millionth time.

bout the only thing i like out of these indie band bands is
Phantom Planet. the s/t record (after Jason Schwartzman
left) was damn good.

My Chemical Romance - no comment (and what i mean by that
is, they can go fistfuck their mothers). terrible band.
terrible fans.

maybe electronic was just too obviously the next step, so of
course no one took it.

i don't think i have a better musical knowledge/taste (if
there is anything as "better taste") than other people. or
at least i refrain that thought now; i had it for some time
but i realized that i was often wrong and that knowing a few
relatively "obscure" bands/artists didn't make me a music
expert in any way.

for my birthday, friends offered me a Chet Baker cd and an
Aphex Twin one. the latest person i talked about music to at
university listened to The Roots, Eels, Radiohead... another
person i know at university seems to know a lot more bands
than i do (he's also in a doom metal band). etc.
