Hi, I'm Yavo and you might remember me from such topics as
"Geogaddi Is Arse" and "Chuff Off Redrum". I have a question
probably only UK people can answer. If I order a R1 dvd from
Amazon.com to post to the UK, do I get hit with any charges
other than standard postage because the last time I did so,
about 3 years ago, I think I had to pay £20 customs charges
or summink.

I don't know either but I can tell you that two dogs are
shagging in my neighbour's front garden.

There are two possible charges, customs duty and import
VAT.

Customs duty is waived if it's under £7, which basically
means your goods have to be worth over £200.

Import VAT is waived if the value of goods is less than
£18. You can therefore import most DVDs without a problem,
but you might get slapped with 17.5% VAT on boxsets.

Of course, you won't have to pay anything at all if your
parcel isn't inspected, which most aren't. If you're
ordering multiple DVDs, try and get them sent seperately,
but only if the cost is advantageous in relation to
hassle/potential VAT.

watch out for customs. they bill you randomly. i once
ordered a bunch of CDs (6 i think) from different amazon
second-hand guys in america, and i got charged £10 customs
on two of them, completely arbitrarily. customs are wankers.
