 | Absolute scum. Can you imagine Honda sueing people who parallel import its cars? This is ludicrous.

Respect to Lik Sang for this:
"As of today, Lik-Sang.com will not be in the position to
accept any new orders and will cancel and refund all
existing orders that have already been placed. Furthermore,
Lik-Sang is working closely with banks and PayPal to refund
any store credits held by the company, and the customer
support department is taking care of any open transactions
such as pending RMAs or repairs and shipping related
matters. The staff of Lik-Sang will make sure that nobody
will get hurt in the crossfire of this ordeal."

I can only hope they survive and return in a few months.
Nintendo got them shut down a few years back (for about 6
months if I recall correctly) for selling GBA flash cards.

 | few extra bits of info over at Gamespot:
Lik-Sang also claimed that Sony Computer Entertainment
Europe executives themselves had bought imported PSP goods
from their company, and went on to name names. Clarysse
said: "Sony Europe's very own top directors repeatedly got
their Sony PSP hard or software imports in nicely packaged
Lik-Sang parcels with free Lik-Sang mugs or Lik-Sang badge
holders, starting just two days after Japan's official
release, as early as December 14, 2004 (more than nine
months earlier than the legal action)."

 and Sony's response:

..in a statement given to British game-industry magazine
MCV, the company took a defiant tone.

"Sony Computer Entertainment successfully sued Pacific Game
Technology (Holding) Limited for infringing [on] our
Intellectual Property rights," said Sony. "Lik Sang did not
contest this case (ie. they did not turn up and therefore
incurred no legal costs). We have been awarded substantial
costs against Lik Sang which have not been paid. We would
therefore strongly deny that our actions have had anything
to do with this website closing (we assume the legal entity
is still trading) and would suggest that this release is
sour grapes on behalf of Lik Sang which is aimed to belittle
Sony Computer Entertainment and the British judicial system
 that ruled against them."

 | Sony has really lost the plot over the last few years... The perception of Sony has dropped, people used to think of
it and Trinitron and decent reasonably well designed stuff.
Now it has been riding on its reputation for a few years and
not really innovating, it's been overtaken by others.

The whole business model at Sony is flawed.
 Example, the PSP:
They are using the razor/razor blade approach:
 cheap razor (games machine)
 pricey blades (games)

This works if you sell hardware (difficult to put this on
 bittorrent)

If you plan to make your money on software, make it either:
 * reasonably priced (psp games are not)
 * worth paying for (i.e. good, unlike most psp games)
 * hard to crack/iso copy, whatever

for the PSP sony decide to take option 3 , so each new PSP
firmware slams shut a door used to run decent homebrew games
 and apps.

The PSP is a bad design, it goes for 2 whopping CPUs and
enough battery to run them at limited 2/3rd speed for a
pathetic time... what about less CPU but decent games and
 more fun...(DS anyone?)
People release homebrew to have fun with decent games, not
the crap peddled by Sony and so Sony make fewer friends by
 trying to stop homebrew.

Now they are doing the same with lik-sang. A company like
Sony is only good if it is popular.
 My parents always buy Panasonic.
They've bought it before and it works well, it may not be
the best choice but, it's a pretty decent one in most cases.

Same with Sony, people buy it because of previous good
experiences. I can see people getting annoyed and buying
someone elses stuff as their experiences turn sour...

Sony had that nice little rootkit virus on those CDs a while
back, now they have the exploding batteries in everyone's
laptops, PS3 is late... PSP is a dissapointment.

I wholeheartedly agree with this topic's title.

 | all console companies work along what you call the "razor/razor blade approach", both Microsoft and Nintendo.

all of them make a loss on the console sales themselves -
the money is in the games.

which is kind of interesting, since the PS3 will be costing
600 fucking dollars, which to me at least is a huge amount
 of money.

how does Sony respond to people saying "my, that's quite
 expensive"..?

"You’ll buy a PS3 at any price — even if you have to
get a second job at Burger King to pay for it"

 | As usual, Dave talks utter sense.
I actually use my PSP far less (and because I take it away
with me less, I buy fewer games) since I lost the ability to
run homebrew on my PSP. I loved having, after all these
years waiting, a 100% accurate megadrive emulator on a
handheld (not to mention NES emulation and the homebrew drum
machines, etc.) Since upgrading the firmware to run GTA:
Liberty City Stories, I've lost this ability. I know I could
unlock it again, but I'd only lose the functionality again
when I buy a new game and each time I do it, I'd be risking
 bricking the PSP.

I also know someone who fixed his defective screen (about a
dozen stuck pixels) using a piece of homebrew software. This
meant he didn't have to return it- saving Sony £200 at the
 time.

Before anyone says, "Oh, but you're the exception, everyone
else just pirates games on it." I'd like to point out that
the 4 people I know who have them all use them the way I do
(did) for homebrew and didn't pirate games for them.

 | Right, so Sony are the bad guys for designing, selling and updating the PSP to leave it without the ability to run
illegal emulators and/or copies of games when they rely on
software sales to make a profit?

So some speccy twat can't run a shitty drum machine on a
 handheld games/media machine. Big deal.

If Lik Sang can't even be arsed appearing at court what do
they expect? This is just a piss poor publicity stunt and
they'll be trading again within the month under the guise of
 'back by popular demand"

 | Ceri, if I presume correctly, your PSP version can be downgraded to 1.5 to run those lovely megadrive emus (which
is the sole reason I use my PSP).

To run newer games, you can run a program called devhook,
which fools it into thinking it is a newer version by
rebooting and loading the later os into RAM from the memory
card, not the flash. That way the flash still has 1.5 and no
need to worry about bricking or whatnot.

I think the fact that I use the PSP to play megadrive games
says alot about what has gone wrong at Sony. The vast
majority of the PSP games are over-priced crap.

 | I've got one on the way. There are 2 types available; one that will play GBA roms and one that wont. You need one that
has 32mb on board so it can launch the GBA roms. Most of the
others only have a few kb so they can only launch NES games
 of <256k!
