all guys talk about, who is better, which album is better,
which song is better, also all you guys can listen music,
but who can make music ?

so it would (will?) be intersting, what do you prefer,
software or hardware ? both ?

HARDWARE VS. SOFTWARE!

I Vote for Hardware.

2 hardware
0 software

i like hardware more, cuz it's more stable than software and
you've got more the control with faders and knobs, also
realtime is better that step.

i don't have anything against hardware - but i'll vote

SOFTWARE

imho .. much more versatile, [in terms of having it all on
the one screen, i like to work that way], takes up less
space, costs less !!! this is a biggie ... and with a good
soundcard, you can hardly tell the difference .. etc. etc.

analog sound is fatter that even virtual digital sound. it's
hard to bring a KORG synthtune in a computer. so give me a
solution, to turn 2knobs at the same time on a computer ,)

Hardware 2
Software 1

phat boy!!!, control freak, (spose thats counted as
hardware) - but then so is a keyboard and mouse!

but then .. there is lots of software in like samplers and
the like so .. :)

re: the analogue thing .. most synths out there are virtual
analog .. perhaps the vs. should be digital vs analog??? :)

I do not have money at the present time for Hardware....

as hardware that I've as software now ;-)

yeah software is good for recording, also good for
mastering, but for filtering, REALTIME (the magic word, that
no one artist won't do it more) triggering and control,
software will never beat hardware!

making music ...
eg.
software synth (FM7) vs hardware synth (clavia nord)
software sampler (HALion) vs hardware sampler (AKAI 5000)
software vocoder (? - orange something) vs hardware
(Electrix Warp factory)

etc. etc.

Thats why I'm building a new computer to use soft
synths...I'm so excited!

But seriously, software has opened up so many door to
aspiring musicians that wouldn't have normally been able to
afford to get into it. Even if you don't get cracked stuff
there is lots of free stuff that if you persevere with you
can get some good results....the possibilities are endless

i'd like to see you guys how d'you to more things at the
same time on a computer g. i just use VST plug ins, some
softsynths, but i DON'T use a sampler or sequencer like
reason or fruityloops (i like cubase). how do you want use
reason on a live gig ?

anyway

hardware 2
software 4

splash around - i undoubtedly would get some .. but .. etc.

yeah i use many software korban, also reaktor, recycle,
rebirth (i just test it actually) wavelab, soundforge, many
vst plug ins, fm7, just xperiment with all things i got...

i like software.. only real hardware i have is this lil ol
yamaha dj-x

i haven't messed with much other hardware tho. but i really
like software because you can churn out all kinds of new
sounds, with hardware it is definitely more hands on but you
have all these sounds built in already and presets, would
seem limiting. software gives me a more expansive feel. i
vote SOFTWARE

hey map, so you know peff then?

i saw Florian Hecker live a bit more than a year ago now,
and he used his G3 laptop w. mouse, combined with a numark
effects unit .. this seemed to be quite a nice combination
for what he was doing. ?

if the time came for a live show.. i think id work out just
bringing my pc and using my dj-x to trigger the different
midi channels or however that works.

offline map from mülligen (Switzerland) on 2002-03-12 11:12 [#00122415]

true, the combination of the 2 elements is a perfect
solution. so...

i would use a computer for send midi sysex messages to
configure the soundgenerators (i use an AKAI S2000 with 8
out's and a Boss DR770 Drummachine, the outs goes to a 16ch
mixer, perfect for muting and eqing the tracks) also use the
computer to run a soft synth, like virsyn or rebirth (303
section and trigger the pc via midi, play patterns or
instruments) the boss dr770 drummachine has a sequencer,
also i have got an alesis mmt8 8track hardware midi
sequencer, so i can switch between the 2 machines (master -
slave) and trigger various rhythms on the sampler, or
drummachine, also computer. for efx i use the computer too,
the audiophile recording card would be good for that i hope,
the sound goes thru a VST effect routed direct to the out,
direct monitoring, so i hope i have a low latency, and i
goes back to the mixer..

oh i forgot the old yamaha psr510 keyboard, i'm on think
what i should to with that... trigger break samples or
seomthing like that... my system is still growing up :)

yes i believe so, you can set the computer keyboard keys to
control mutes/solos/pattern changes etc

do you have a site with some o' yo music on it?

be quite keen to hear some ..

i reckon, if i were to get some hardware, i'd get a 909, as
a 16 step midi sequencer? and an effex box (numark? or sum
such) ..

offline leftrightronic on 2002-03-12 11:19 [#00122424]

id prolly just use modplug tracker or sonar and have the
channels output as seperate midi channels anc control stuff
with my dj-x, like all those fun knob twiddling things :D

korben, a site will come yes...

but actually i want do more things, xperiment with all
things in realtime, that's my dream, controlling each sound
on a setup, fast change, non-static rhythms and so on... so
i need a big fat controller.

i think there is also a new control freak out which is quite
potent??

support for all systems, w9x,me,2000,xp,mac, include
asio,gsif,direct-x,wdm and so on..
