SECRET! Bases!

As a kid, did you ever have woods or forest near your house
and you would go off and play. You may have had one or two
"secret" places, or areas you liked to visit more than
others.

Growing up we had about an 80 acre lot behind us all full of
thick woods and in the center a grassy flat with tall
cat-tails and a stream. Me and my friends would play "Army"
here with toy guns and Thrift store camoflague.

They were just cool places to sneak off to and sit.

Ever since I moved, and have grown up I don't have any
places like this now. I live in suburbia Omaha. There are a
few big/natural areas around, but not so easy to find
anymore because of urban sprawl and other city expansion.

I think it's about time I made a new secret base.

We used to play Army also all around the neighborhood, good
times, hiding, shooting, water balloons.

I dont know if theres a lot of woodsy areas directly in
Omaha, but Memorial Park @ 60th&Dodge, is a good hang out.

Swift_you new secret base is the Nuddy Bar.

I was always more special ops, hiding in the bushes and
raiding other people's secret bases.

Yeah, right on! :D I was relly infatuated with snipers a lot
for some reason. The element of hiding. I even saved up some
money and bought material and made one of those "ghilly
suits". It was so much fun. I kinda still want to do this
stuff now that I think about it.

I think you'll find the postage and packaging prohibitively
expensive.

I used to like to read about the land in Britain. I always
thought the Cumbrian Mnts. were beautiful. That's right
isn't it, the Cumbrian mountains? The one with "Old Man".

There are mountains in Cumbria. In fact, the highest point
in England is there, Scafell Pike.

I'm pondering a move to the Vale of Edale at the foot of
Kinder Scout in the Peak District.

nice in the winter, but that's just the kind of scene I
like.

i like this thread. my secret place wasn't really a secret,
but still kinda esoteric for me and my friends when i was
younger. we could escape to that space and no-one would know
where we were..

this inspires me to take some photos of it to link here...i
think i might do that instead of describing it

Cool cool cool.
I kind of want to climb the tree in my back yard today and
sit in it hidden under the leaves and watch the birds. If
anyone saw me though, it could be quite awkward.

2 of my mates used to play on the roundabout by their
office. They did this wearing suits, it looked like
something from a surreal comedy. :)

3. The Folk of the Faraway Tree (1946)
4. Up the Faraway Tree (1951)

sigh, *secretly longs for childhood*

In Alan Moore and Dave Lloyd's graphic novel "V for
Vendetta," V reads "The Magic Faraway Tree" to his protege
Evey before bed, and alludes to "The Land of
Do-As-You-Please" and "The Land of Take-What-You-Want" over
the course of the book.

Yeah, I originally came to know about the area because the
railway from Sheffield to Manchester runs through that
valley. I use it sometimes and have seen it in all kinds of
weather, but it was pretty damn spectacular when everywhere
was covered in snow.

I went up there last week with a mate, wandered around and
took loads of photos, which can be found here
under the topics named 'Peak District X'. A bit of a grey
day, but nevermind.

I can get there myself on the train in a couple of hours, so
I think I'll buy some hiking boots, waterproofs and have a
bit of an explore.
