i got this earlier this afternoon, was gonna start this
topic.. had a feeling you'd do the honours : )
hearing random songs is one thing, but im quite pleased with
this album atm, better than guero and also better than what
i was expecting.
the last track is one of the most experimental things becks
pull off, espicially recently, so that was a bit of a shock.
(tho it couldve done without the cellphones dead bass.)

i think guero is shit, except several notes here or there.
hope this one will be better!

i was disappointed by guero in a way, but i still think it's
great. this new album is fucking great so far. more solid in
all. far better coherency. lovely.

guero was terrible in my opinion.. like, some songs were
good (girl, earthquake weather), but working with the dust
brothers was a bad move. all the songs sound bland and
repetitive.
there are some things i could pick at from nigels production
on the information, but id rather not cos the album is well
done and a definite step up for beck.

dark star? damn, thats one of my least favourites : D
as for my favourites.. elevator music, cell phones dead,
soldier jane, new round, though thats likely to change some
time soon, i like all the tracks really.

barely. i think, around 5 (of 15) songs could be considered
rap, and even then alot of them have other crap thrown in.

steal my body home, the whole of mellow gold is fantastic,
such a brilliant beck album, though it took its time for me.

dark star, for me, seems to be trying to be seachange just a
little bit too much. and the mood is all bleh.

Points: 9844 Status: Regular | Followup to pigster: #01977554

"mood is all bleh"? what does that even mean :O

doesn't sound like "trying" to be, has a similar string
arrangement/sound but it features a rap and a very different
dynamic in general.

it's alright if you don't like it(!), subjective matter's
like that, but the critique is a bit odd, 's all

offline pigster from melbs on 2006-09-27 03:55 [#01978307]

haha yeah, i dunno. its all good btw.
some guy on beck forum is saying beck was inspired by boc
for the last track... simply because theyre both electronic
and beck has said he likes boc, besides that i see no
connection.
am i deaf : O

offline staz on 2006-09-27 04:06 [#01978309]
Points: 9844 Status: Regular

i hear very little connection too, although horsefactory
mentioned the boc factor to me as well. i think it sounds
much more like his AIR collaborations

offline pigster from melbs on 2006-09-27 06:34 [#01978356]
Points: 4480 Status: Lurker

elevator music reminded me of boc's remix of dead dogs two,
but beck said he liked campfire headphase, not listened to
all their remixes and such, so there could be no connection
there anyway..

most of it just sounds like beck, and beck has said it links
seachange to guero. i reckon nigel left a bit of a mark on
motorcade as well.

i'm really enjoying this record. i hear some boc influence
on ‘the horrible fanfare/landslide/exoskeleton’ (mostly
the ‘aquarius’-style voice samples; i hear some
astrobotnia style sounds as well) & the record is peppered
with influences i love: herbie hancock, cocteau twins,
stevie wonder, augustus pablo, serge gainsbourg and probably
others i’m forgetting/ not picking up on. this is probably
the finest example of beck’s toybox of synthesizers,
harmonicas and hilarious abstract lyrics. extra points for
the tasteful use of max/MSP on ‘1000BPM’, and for
sampling the william burroughs/kurt cobain collab, “the
preist they called him” on the title track.nice. nigel
godrich is all over this record. way, way way better than
guero which i liked.

just got it : )

and the first impression is excellent! the style is still
different enough from his previous albums; it doesn't feel
"stripped down" like Guero did sometimes, and at times it
even kind of reminded me of some b-sides like Deadweight (if
you haven't heard Deadweight, you should, and you should see
Michel Gondry's video for it too).

i made a cover with the stickers:

front
inside the booklet
back of the booklet
back of the cd

(i haven't used them all, there's still another "Beck" logo
one, a sticker for each track, and 3-4 other ones. so
there's plenty. you may not get the same ones i did, since
you get one sticker sheet out of four at random.)

not a patch on Odelay, but the only way he's going to ever
touch Odelay is to make another album like Odelay, which he
doesn't want to do. This poses a problem. He may always be
less interesting as a result. I like weird, fucked up Beck
circa 1993-1998. At least this new album has some left
turns and feels a bit looser and less rushed than Guero was.

the way beck puts it in interviews (though hes never really
just said it).. it seems like, the information is something
beck/godrich have been working on for some time. and then
when godrich wasnt able to work on the album, beck took the
time to work with dust brothers again. he let out some songs
which didnt turn out too well in production but meh. its all
good.

I think this is a decent album, but certainly not up to his
best. It's hard to sound fresh everytime even for Beck, but
when I listen to this I get the feeling that I've heard it
all before. And combined with the fact (IMO) that the
melodies and the "feeling" used to be better before, I'm a
little bit disappointed.

this one is a good album too.
heard it in a shop in Perth the otherday,
felt good to listen to. if anybody wants the poster
I can nab about 5 in the city that Ive spotted.
Dont think they'll mind seeing as how it has been released.

no Odelay isn't his best.

anyway, i think it's a pretty damn good album but there are
a few shite tunes on there like Strange Apparition and the
overly long last track(s).

I loved most of his other stuff though.

Guero and this doesn't touch mutations and midnite vultures,
for reasons mortso mentioned.

Heard "Broken Cellphone" pretty good, but not really that
much different than his 90s stuff. My fave track is "Get
