Oh No! It's the TV Detector man!

He's asking if I have a telly... err.. I think I'm gonna
have to lie!

Be worried. They're persistent cunts I hear.

They're also lying, unethical, unreasonable cunts.

I got threatening "last warning" letters when I had
paid. I actually went to see them about it and they said
"don't worry if you've paid, ignore them; we just send those
to everyone to scare people who haven't paid into paying."

NB: I had paid about 6 weeks earlier. This wasn't some case
where I'd paid after the letter had been sent but before it
arrived.

I pointed out that aside from wasting my time making me go
to see them to rectify this, how on earth was this
reasonable behaviour? What if an elderly person had recieved
this letter (having paid), but was so worried/confused by it
that they paid again. They said that if a double payment was
made, they would refund it. I said "I don't believe you. If
your admin systems are good enough to spot that and rectify
that, why can't they spot who has paid and who has not."
The guy just looked amused and it took a great deal of
restraint not to spit in his face.

The only reason I don't begrudge paying TV licence is
because it pays for the BBC website and also Radio 1 and
1xtra. Their TV is pretty poor IMO and aside from Doctor Who
there hasn't been anything I've regularly watched on it in
the past 3 years.

dont worry, all our databases are years out of date. we do
loads of mailing stuff for Peugeot, they give new peugeot
buyers magazines and shit, and we get hundreds returned
every issue because the addresses are completely wrong or
the guy they were sent to died 10 years ago

Awesome. Sounds like some bright spark in management elected
to save a bit of money by sacking a couple of kids who did
data entry, even if it means wasting several times their
salaries on unneccessary printing/postage costs because
records are never updated.

The people who try to enforce collection of the TV licencing
are fuckers too. They have no legal right to search your
house, but they insinuate that they do and most people
through ignorance, let them in.

Look, do you know, or have a mate that knows anyone who
actually IS a TV detector man??? No. Nobody does. They
don't exist. What the fuck are they gonna do anyway? They
can't do you unless someone comes into your house and
actually sees a TV. All that "we've detected it" bollocks
is just, er, bollocks. In the unlikely event that anyone
does come to your house, just be an obnoxious cunt, don't
let 'em in and threaten to physically harm them. They won't
come back....seriously, they'll just mark you a a problem
case, will have no physical evidence of you having a TV and
will not want to send anyone else round coz they might get
hurt and then sue for job related damages.

true. like road tax. i know someone who has been driving for
4 years and has never taxed any of his cars. and benefit
fraud. they just say "we are after you" to scare you.

Chin Bwoy is correct. Whilst the technology exists it's too
expensive for stuff which is accurate enough to say with any
real degree of certainty that you (as opposed to your
neighbour) have a TV (as opposed to a computer) in your
house. It's far cheaper/easier to send out threatening
reminders which will scare the majority of non-payers into
paying.

Ezkerraldean: Warn your mate re: road tax. A couple of times
(in different parts of the country) I've seen police
flagging down and spot checking everyare testing car-mounted cameras that can spot (the absence
of) tax disks.

he has found in-date ones a few times in scrapyards. which
is pretty good. but he is still stupid not to pay, if he
does get caught its a big nasty fine at least.

offline Chin Bwoy Phat from London (United Kingdom) on 2006-09-18 05:01 [#01972987]

I got a week suspended prison sentence once for not paying
my road tax....well, I got taken to court for not paying it
and fined. Then I didn't pay the fines. Then I got fined
again for non payment of fines. Which I didn't pay. One
day a policeman comes round my house and says he'll be back
tomorrow to take me to court again to explain why I haven't
paid. I went to court, couldn't satifactortorally explain
myself, was a bit cocky and nearly got locked up. They gave
me one week to pay it all or I was going down! Needless to
say I paid it then.....

Yep. Also, police absolutely hate it. If they pull you
(possibly for something else) and find you don't have
one/it's out of date by more than a week or two, they'll
come down on you like a ton of bricks: They'll go over the
car with a fine comb, check your tyre wear, serve a producer
(take all your documents to the police station), etc.

He might think by never driving recklessly he'll not be
spotted, but if he's involved in an accident the police turn
up at (which may not be his fault in any way), they'll check
it as a matter of course. It's not just the police, either.
Over zealous car parking attendants report it, as do some
neighbours, particularly if parking is in short supply near
his house and he parks on the road.

For the amount of money saved it's really not worth it.

Sky is the biggest fucking waste of money since trophy
wives. I wouldn't pay for that shit unless I had money to
quite literally burn. It would have to be taxually (I think
I've made that word up but I like it) in my favour to get
Sky.

Sky's business conduct is fucking atrocious and I won't get
it on principle, although the cost is enough to put you off
too. BTW 'Taxually' is a cool world, I'll start using it.

I knew it was in the off, but didn't realise it had gone
live yet. Is that they generally check them as you go past,
or only if you get flashed for speeding at the same time?

BTW spoke to that bloke about the 'plates. They're in the
post to me now, I'll email you as soon as I've got them if
that's okay?

just dont answer the door man, i got busted a few years ago,
on a sunday mornin! it was the day after i'd moved into the
house aswell...the guy who had lived in the house b4 us was
still there for a day while we were movin in and he had
loads of his mates over for his last night there. so this
rottweiler of tv detection knocks on the door like the
fuckin police at 10 am on the sunday and one of them
answered the door. my housemates TV was literally right in
the middle of the floor in front of the door and it was
either give em your bank details for direct debit on the
spot or a grand fine, fucking nightmare....tv is so shit
anyway, you should just get rid of it! and this is my rant
for today
