So the fact that nicotine is chemically addictive rests on a
collective delusion? If we all just stop believing it has
any effect, then this will become true? Call me a cynic, but
do I sense the appearance of a wikipedia link to some
obscure and utter wanky belief system at any moment?

no, it is chemically addictive, but not to such an extent
that quitting it is actually hard.

it's also quite funny how angry smokers get when you steal
or destroy a smoke (when a person smokes he forfeits all his
rights so I can do whatever I want to them while they're
smoking). I once ate a friends last smoke.. hahaha! he got
crazy pissed, but even though he bought another pack of
smokes later he didn't smoke the rest of the evening. him
being pissed also subsided once that ten second "oh, I need
a smoke" thing passed.

wow, I almost wrote that book

but I'd put a gun on the cover and a picture of me in the
back where I threatened to come over and shoot your
knee-caps if you didn't stop smoking.

Allen Carr (born 2 September 1934) is most notable as the
author of books on how to stop smoking and, as he stresses,
escape nicotine addiction . Carr points out that, contrary
to their perception, smokers do not receive a boost from
smoking a cigarette. Smoking a cigarette only relieves the
withdrawal symptoms from the previous cigarette; the
withdrawal symptoms arising from the current cigarette will
be the prompt for the next. In this way the drug addiction
perpetuates itself. He asserts that the relief that smokers
feel on lighting a cigarette is continually experienced by
non-smokers. He further asserts that smoking is less
addictive than is commonly assumed, and that the withdrawal
symptoms are in fact simply doubt in the mind of the
ex-smoker. Stopping smoking is not as traumatic as commonly
assumed if that doubt can be circumvented. His contention is
that fear of giving up is what causes the majority to
continue smoking.

Many readers appreciate the fact that Carr, who until 1983
was a chain smoker himself, explicitly allows them to carry
on smoking while reading the book. A comparatively large
group of people have gone public and declared that, after
many unsuccessful attempts, it was Carr's book that helped
them to stop smoking. The claimed success rate for those
using Carr's method is about 70-90%.

Carr has also written a number of other How to books, on
subjects such as losing weight and controlling alcohol
consumption.

In late July 2006 it was revealed that he had been diagnosed
with lung cancer at the age of 71.[1]. The following month
he revealed that it was terminal and his life expectancy was
about nine months.

Fuck. I only just found out that last bit now. Shit. Wel at
least he's saved lives.

i'm at work and drinking a 24oz of PBR right now but i don't
consider myself an alcoholic. it's night time and i like to
drink in the evening. this is my 3rd beer today after 2 New
Castles this afternoon/early evening.

i almost never get "absolutely polluted." I rarely even
drink enough to feel it. I just like drinking beer. PBR is
my favorite of the shitty beers, so when i want to slum it,
that's what i drink.

I think alcoholism is just someones way of self medicating
clinical depression. I went through a short phase where I
had to drink to feel good. When I was clinically depressed.
I always get the roll of the eyes when I say that, who
cares.
The term alcoholism was also coined long before reuptake
inhibitors were invented.
