electronic music is difficult to write

at least good one is. for me popular electronic music is
going nowhere atm (appart from very few artists that have
been around for quite some time now). and it's funny it wore
out so quickly since it's the youngest of all the genres.
rock music is still going strong, so is folk and all sorts
of guitar music. im thinking it's because those people who
write guitar music have knowledge opposed to (most) people
in electronic music who more or less just play around. it's
not so long ago when xltronic was full of threads about cool
new albums and look at it nowdays..

the world still thinks that all electronic music is Moby. or
shit that goes " DOOSH DOOSH DOOSH DOOSH DOOSH". Then they
wonder what the music is in MTV's credits and the music in
Scion commercials. etc etc.

electronic music= the matrix album, Eiffel 65, BarbyGirl,
Chemical Brothers, The Techno remixes of Motzart etc etc...
Cell Phone Ringtons make it clear that Mass american Media
has no fucking clue about what electronic music has been
doing since 97. Esp
in that ModTones,Xringer, Ringster, etc etc (some popular
cellphone ringtone services) have Techno,Electronica
(whichever) as a category but only have shit that came out
94-99(if that) and only: Moby, Chemical Bros, The Matrix
Theme, Barby Girl, Darude- Sandstorms, Enya. etc etc

I dont know if it is this bad in Europe or Scandinavia.

Rock and folk are going strong because they are easy for
people to understand. Electronic stuff is more ambiguous,
even as far back as Eno, it's like: "What emotion does this
provoke?" It's a little bit vague. (In a good way of
course!)

goins strong in terms of creativity is what i meant. and no
one makes music like eno anymore. not even eno.

Then what rock is going strong creatively?
Seems like it's repeating itself for the last 20 years to
me.

rock is regurgitating just as much, really, even the most
avantgarde and obscure ones.

the thing is it's interesting because it's aware of its
past. which i couldn't say for electronica.

Well, with electronic music, I think it is standing still
becuase there are SO many possibilities of what to do with
it, that we stick with the few ways we know to make
electronic music.

I still think the dreams for electronic music from the
middle of the century have yet to be realized. Electronic
music being pursued by theorists (there are several out
there, but they come far from the significance of other
artists) is something that interests me, as I think it has
been overlooked.

Rock really isn't that interesting either, though. I was
briefly into rock for a while, until I realized that I just
wanted a break from electronic, that it didn't really have
anything new.

it seems on a trend toward minimalism
although rhythmic minimalism can still
be dynamic and innovative; scales can
only go so far and microtonalism bores
me i think autechre are at the vanguard
as far as the relevance and ingenuity of
their sound synthesis but theres also the
argument for stylistic consistency & real
talent in thematic emotional composition.

"the thing is it's interesting because it's aware of its
past. which i couldn't say for electronica. "

I'm not sure I'm following your argument. If a person who
has never heard of Led Zepplin writes a song that sounds
like one of theirs, you can't exactly say the music, or even
the musician, is aware of its heritage.

I'm not a fan of metallica, by any stretch, and I've only
heard a handful of their songs in my life. My band a few
years ago had written a song with a riff in it that was
exactly like one found in a metallica song that I heard
later, and I realized we had to change the song. What I am
failing to say succinctly is that 2 people with very
different musical influences can write very similar music
"if the mood strikes" so to speak. I think most musicians
eventually branch out from their roots at some point, and if
this is true then a steady evolution of rock music is
inevitable.
----

(this is not directed at tolstoyed)

I agree that Rock music, for the most part, is being
rehashed, but there have got to be a few bands out there
that are still making music wildly different music. The main
problem these days is deciding which music is "rock" and
which isn't, because if you have a very precise and narrow
definition of what Rock music should be (ie, classic rock),
then most likely you would agree that not much new ground
has been covered these last few years. I think, perhaps,
that people such as myself, who already listen to electronic
music, have a broader definition of what could be considered
rock, and in that case there must certainly be pioneers to
be heard.

i think music is exciting still, and we're all learning from
each other. it's not holy, it's just fun. people are really
uptight and scared when it comes to their religion
sometimes. chill out and take it e-z. there are no laws
here, so it's cool. don't try to enforce any.

im not really sure what you're trying to say there in the
first part. i wasn't talking about those cover bands or
something. more about bands that are aware of how rock music
was developing and are able to continue develope those
ideas.

and for the second part - i didn't mean calssic rock. rock
is a very broad term yeah, but i was in general thinking of
guitar/bass/drums thing with all sort of variations and
other instruments included.

i don't care about rules but this what we have in electronic
music (for the bigger part) now is just unexciting.

well, the palette is seemingly more constricted than the
"rock" one which has grown so big over the years it's hard
to pinpoint the genre easily anymore. electronic can just
be... well, electronic. it operates under a different
culture and has a very different "ideology" of sound, it
seems. i dunno, i still find loads of exciting music, i
don't really tend to get disappointed like that because i
don't really think in genres when it comes to discovering
the latest and greatest.

its a very subjective matter but a good thread nevertheless,
i can see both the points made by tolstoyed and staz
depending on the mood, but yeah it's not like when i was a

cover bands? no, man. I'm talking about how loads of rock
music gets made without the artists having any shred of
awareness of how shamelessly similar it is to music that was
better the first time around. Sometimes it happens by
mistake, sometimes it occurs by design. Basically, I was
saying I'm not sure where you're going with the "rock music
is aware of itself" thing.

i've had friends in rock bands and in rap groups, and heard
them both instruct each other to try and sound more like
someother artist. its not a big deal at all to sound or
purposefully try to sound like another. music like math
repeats itself, any one thing can be expressed in limitless
ways
