Product Review
The 1601 is a purpose-built digital mixer, hand-engineered
in the uk by professional audio technicians at soundcraft,
for the ultimate in mixer quality and sound. A digital mixer
ergonomically designed to complement scratch djs and
turntablists, enabling them to maximise their creative
potential. Packed with unique features such as the hi-pass
filter to instantly and effectively remove turntable rumble
and feedback that may arise from bass heavy performance or
poor connections. Also incorporated is an aural exciter to
boost those tightly pressed vinyls and to accentuate your
scratches significantly. Built to survive hours of practise
with fully replaceable faders and knobs and reverse / curve
adjust on all faders. The 1601 is a two channel battle mixer
that equally suits smooth club style mixing with clean, open
fader section for quick manoeuvres, 360 degree customizable
phono line switches, crossfader monitor selector, backlit
headphone out with eq, ultra clear input and output level
monitoring leds, full cut hi, mid, low eq rotary pots and a
superb flexible send and return fx loop with pre / post
fader and return channel assign, the 1601 is a very
versatile and customizable performance mixer complete with
the legendary urei sound quality. Finished with non-wear
anodised top plate and striking red, white and blue monitor
leds, the urei 1601 is nothing short of formidable in every
way a mixer could be.

Looks like it's Soundcraft rebadged from the description.
I've not used that particular one, but I've not really been
impressed by the 2 or 3 soundcraft mixers I've used.

Why?
Sound? Build quality?

Sure will be better than my Roland Dj Mixer. The fucker
bleeds and makes tons of noise...
And for that price range I can't afford the Pro Vestax (I
think u r a Vestax user, don't u?)

I can't be 100% the third one wasn't Citronic (I sometimes
confuse the two) On one of them the sound was noticeably
bad, the other one didn't impress me much. The feel of the
general build quality (especially faders/knobs) was a bit
flimsy and didn't seem like they'd last very vell. One of
them was the mixer in a nightclub, so to be fair it had had
a rough life, but it hadn't held up well; bleeding faders,
crackle when the headphones were moved, etc.

Come to think of it, I've actually got a Soundlab mixer
myself, too. A little 4 channel mono one. It's fine for
putting 4 devices into one channel on a normal mixer and
because the dials on it are rarely used, it has held up well
(had it about 4 years now).

My advice would always be to go for a more basic spec, less
feature-rich, but better built mixer. This is even more
relevant on a scratch mixer (I assume that's what you want
it for?) I find I often end up not using the extra features
on myPMC-270A (this is a 275, but they're near
identical, bar the crossfader) and in fact, my (to my mind,
better) PMC-06 is attached to my 'tables instead.

I know people will call me a vestax salesman (I'm not- I
wrote a reasonably critical review of their Faderboard) but
I'd consider a good condition second hand mixer of better
build quality over one of those- it'll last longer too
probably. EG My 270 is second hand and in a total of about 7
years heavy use (both myself and the previous owner have
gigged it) and it still looks/performs like new. Only thing
replaced on it was one xfader, which cost £20. Even if you
don't like it, you'll be able to sell it without much of a
loss in a few months time, whereas a new one will depreciate
more.

RE: not being to afford a vestax. You should be able to find
a new PMC-06 for that sort of money and have lots of cash
left over (could be spent on an even better crossfader)
LAZY_06.

...and even if you definately do want more features: EQ
kills, fx send/return, etc. I think this would
probably be better than the Urei.

Hmmmm...
You're right, it's for scratching purposes.
The 275 looks nice, and not that much more money...
So, assuming it's better quality I may check that.
Thnx!

(checkin mode enganged)

Also, I may say that the Urei has got good reviews in
Scratchwork, and u r the one who sent me there...

Just found the Vestax PMC-08 Pro Mixer.
Woha!
Maybe I should keep workin' with what I've got and save for
that...
The Rane seems very good, but I don't like the looks.
Stupid, I know, but what can I do...

Don't get the 275 for scratching! I was just using it to
illustrate how I often don't use/need the extra features on
a mixer. It's great for techno and longer mixes though :)

Might be worth reading up on if you can shoe-horn a scratch
mixer xfader into it (then it'd be excellent, so long as you
didn't want really free moving upfaders), but even if it's
technically possible, total cost would be fairly high.

I've never tried the Samurai version of the 07/don't know
anyone other than Gizmo (off Skratchworx) who has. I've got
the samurai version of the 06 though and it's great. Slight
dead area at either end of the xfader is the only negative
thing I have to say about it. Once it gets to where the
sound is coming in though, it doesn't half come in fast. I
find I don't use the special curves at all really, just the
standard one turned to sharpest.

Re: The price, I was very lucky to get mine for the price I
did. I got it prior to Vestax's price hike (way to compete
with Rane, Vestax *claps slowly* ;-) ) and at a low price
even then.

Personally, I don't notice the slightly high, metallic
quality to the sound of the samurai that some people claim
(and in any event; lets be frank, most scratch carts sound
quality is already less than optimal, so unless you're
running an audiophile setup into it, it's largely
irrelvant). To me it seems a bit emporer's new clothes;
analogue purists resenting the digital xfader in it...

Horsefactory: Very, very nice. That's the only thing I can
ever see myself replacing my 06 Pro D with. The Rane isn't a
big enough leap (and I'm not good enough to take advantage
of the difference anyway) from it to justify the cost of me
replacing it IMO. If my 06 was nicked/broken though, it'd be
the ttm56 I'd replace it with.

Teh sex0r!

Lovely looking mixer. I've not played with one, but
Skratchworx loved it and it's a top end Vestax so it's
unlikely you'll be disappointed. Let us know/hear how you
get on with it.

He he, took me months and months to save for my decks and
275 and then the same again for the 06. You can do it mate!

I second the motion to get a vestax

I've had no problems, and I spilled beer into it once.

The first mixer looks fairly horrible, and the second one
looks better, but as spawn of Darth Vader it still looks a
bit crap.

I would suggest get the Vestax PMC06. either the
'champagne' colour "analogue" one or the black(ish)
"digital" samurai fader one.
I have the analogue one and it is great. No bells, no
whistles, but does the job perfectly. Value for money is
very good.

It is a proven reliable workhorse and doesn't take up as
much room as 05. I would suggest 06 over 05.

I would suggest looking at Sapphiers @ decks.co.uk. I got
a really good price on my 1210MK5s there, much better than
HTFR and the offer also took money off the carts too. Worth
checking.
