There may not be an answer to this question or it may be
incredibly obvious.

I am studying music theory, and to anyone else who
is/has/knows the answer to my question, is there any
theoretical basis for timbres?

Well, I am sure there is for voicing in an orchestra or
symphony, but I mean like on an electronic scale, where the
range of timbres is near infinite.

I would be mostly satisfied with links, or books I could
look at. I'll ask my prof tomorrow though.

I have found a few sites suggesting various methods for
creating a theory, so I would assume that none really exist
at this point.
