although this competition is now over i thought id share with you guys my redesign of the slashdot website to see what you thought. the rules stated that the existing xhtml tags must be used and only the CSS could be changed.
So this is what i came up with. I submitted it like this even though I wasnt 100 about the right column so that i could get feedback and iterate. he said it was a very cool page, but alas not what they were looking for! (so i didnt change it)

looks great to me, like a normal professional site. maybe it's overly green and the dark green could be black. do you have to know a programming language, or just use html or what?

Just changed the existing CSS (Cascading Style Sheet)! I think you are right about the green, thats also what they said. I think thats what i find most difficult with webdesign - getting colours right and knowing what to colour what. Thanks!

the top part with the pattern is good, but there's too much green overall. i'd have either made the main body background much paler or completely white. i'm not sure about the right column either, there's too many cut off corners and gaps... and i must say the red and green look horrible together to my eyes.

Sorry, I should also have said that the green had to be used too as it is Slashdot's colour.
I pretty much agree, but red and green are complimentry colours, and the green I fed to the colour combo tool spat out that shade of red and I thought they went quite well. Thanks though. It's nice to get feedback outside of friends/family.

i realise you had to use green, but not so much of it is the point i was trying to make. that colour tool can be useful, but i'd always rely on my own judgement before it.

Not a bad design. I'm with Horsefactory on the green background. I'd have preferred white or something paler. That's just me (and him) though. Better than any design I'd have come up with.
