www.absorb.com is the most comprehensive, with well
considered reviews etc

Allmusic.com is a very huge music site, you'll find reviews
for ANYTHING on there. It even gives a list of an artists
best tracks.

GEM sounds corny

use braindance...tis a much better and more fitting

as the rephlex site puts it

it's not "intelligent", it's not "dance", it's not "music"
it's so much more... it's "BRAINDANCE"

offline flea from depths of your mind (New Zealand) on 2002-03-10 22:03 [#00120251]
Points: 9083 Status: Regular

yeah I like Braindance as well..but I relate it to the more
damaged and rawer sounding stuff like the stuff on
Rephlex...IDM stuff..like stuff on Warp tends to be cleaner
more polished..I think it's a nice distinction.. like Chaos
AD Vs Hard Normal Daddy..also Braindance is almost always
danceable(I know there are exceptions) while IDM also
encompasses non rhythmic..atonal..asymmetric..glitchy
stuff..like say Pansonic..wont exactly be called
Braindance...there's a need for term like IDM

and as a lame plug that'll get me nowhere but abuse

try www.iocentral.org

if anything it is trying to be a collective of reviews done
by random people. have a look there, although it kinda
needs more to it, just don't know what...

offline grm from London (United Kingdom) on 2002-03-10 22:07 [#00120253]
Points: 494 Status: Regular

maybe, but it is really kind of random rather than
'intelligent'

experimental is another term as most if not all 'warp' style
people cannot be soundly placed in any particular term,
altho maybe 'leftfield' i suppose

nah never pictured me self as the voice of authority!!
thanks but no thanks

nac mat: doesn't GEM same "problem" as IDM?

people say that the term idm implies that only idm music is
intelligent, making it a little pretentious.

gem basically tells the same thing.

why not Electonic Listening Music?

anyway, in my opinion, idm is here to stay. it's too late
to change it back!

I fail to see what's wrong with IDM..it's serviced the
genres quite well and pluging it into a search engine will
bring up tons of well established resources on line..

offline grm from London (United Kingdom) on 2002-03-10 22:10 [#00120258]

its just a media phrase so they can try and understand then
go back to their 'proper' music

offline CORTEX from Canada on 2002-03-10 22:11 [#00120260]
Points: 3346 Status: Regular

that is why it's too late to change it.
the term is well established.

offline CORTEX from Canada on 2002-03-10 22:13 [#00120261]
Points: 3346 Status: Regular

and who cares what the term actually means? it's what it
refers to that is important, imo.

and regarding your original question I agree with
ophecks..all music is the most comprehensive and in depth
site I have seen..excellent reviews and such and the deep
linking is pretty cool too..

offline korben dallas from nz on 2002-03-10 22:51 [#00120301]

hehe - yeah, i tend to make braincouch opposed to braindance
:)

i don't really mind idm - and yeah allmusic is da poo's ..
specially the linking. forced exposure is quite cool ..
features a few reviews by Hrvatski.

yeah, allmusic seems to have pretty much everything. thanks
for the info. greatly appreciated :)

on a related topic, does anyone recommand grooves magazine?
ive never seen it, but from what i can tell from their
website, it seems to be a great source of info for
idm/braindance/gem/etc.

Yeah, I love allmusic.com. I always check out info on
artists I'm not familiar with on that site. Reviews, links,
similar artists, it's got it all.

the WIRE magazine seems to have a very good coverage of IDM
and all other experimental genres..electronic and otherwise

although it does label all that under 'electronica' amongst
others

idm tis rarely mentioned

tho

yeah, but stuff like afx, global goon and agf get filed
under 'electronica' in their reviews section...
