had some problems lately with my ibook, where on start up
it just did the grey screen with the apple and nothing more.
So i did all the Disk First Aid stuff and fixed some problem
it found using Disk Warrior. Now a few weeks later its
happened again, no problems found or solved by First Aid or
Disk Warrior.

I've backed up everything and I erased and reinstalled OSX,
but someone just told me I should have reformatted instead
of erased. I dont know how to do this, can anyone help, or
point me to some help?

There is an option when you boot up from a set of OSX
install disks. It's not obvious though, it's in an options
sub menu early in the install.

sure your logic board (i.e. motherboard in your pc) isn't
going? this isn't uncommon.

I've heard that also, but the few iBooks I've sent for
repair for work lately with suspect logic boards just needed
new hard drives.

i dont have a clue... help me

btw I found what I wanted, it was in disk utility and the
erase tab, but I had to chose an option for 'write all
zeros' or something like that

How old is it? How much RAM? If, after a clean install you
still get this problem it could be a dodgy disk or logic
board.

run the apple hardware test from your install disk to see if
theres anything fucked up. you can do this by booting from
the cd and select the hardware test thing. that is if you
have that prog included on your ibook installers.

2 yrs old, 512 ram... hopefully it will stay fixed. how
expensive would a new disk or logic thingy cost?

new 80gb disk around £70. You'd have to send it back to
apple to get a new logic board at around £100-£200
depending on the model.

If it keeps fucking up, try a new disk first. They're a pain
to fit though.

i didnt see that test, i think i did every thing on the
install disk. although i didnt try the 2nd disk, dunno...

ohshit sorry, you need to restart and hold down the Alt key,
that will take you to the select startupdisk thing. I havent
had my dinner yet so my head's a bit slow

if it's a ~2 year old g4 ibook, they're especially prone to
the logic boards going bung.

that said, it definitely could be the hard drive too! this
sort of stuff can be fun to work out!

any symptoms when the thing doesn't boot up properly;
freezing at all, any data problems, etc?

Ive had almost no problems until this. When it didnt start
up it went to the grey screen and then did nothing. Its only
frozen about 5-10 times in two years, and that was explained
by some funny peripherals every time i think.

the only other problem Ive ever had with this iBook is that
if I fold the screen too forcefully it goes almost
completely dark, but Im sure thats unrelated.

the thing is i'll be back at university in about a month, so
if I have to send it off it would be ideal to do it now
while I dont really need it

Have you run disk utility, to see if the computer can
recognise what is failing (if anything)? Click on first aid,
then verify disk to see what it comes back with.

If it says that there are problems, you need to boot from
your install disk, then run system profiler from the
utilities option there. 9/10 it will sort your problem.

I also recommend downloading either Tweak Freak or
Macjanitor from versiontracker.com if you haven't done so
already. They are great pieces of free software that keep
your computer nice and sparkly.

Let me know how you get on, I am a little bit of a Mac-Daddy
(but not in the Kriss Kross sense).

Silly boy.

I have never had a major problem with Apple in the 6 or 7
years that I've been using them.

Are you the dude that had major problems with his
powerbook??

i used to be quite a Mac zealot, and i honestly hadn't had a
problem with Apple until having one of the more recent
machines.

i'm sure you know that already though from my lengthy
thread.

at the end of the day, when i pay over £2,500 for a laptop
i expect the first one to work perfectly. if that's
defective i DEMAND the replacement to work as it should.

i think you could say it was a sign from god when the fourth
machine had exactly the same problem

i do miss working with Apple machines...it's just a shame
that they couldn't have their quality controlled

what rig are you running btw :D

I'm still on my 12" G4 Powerbook.

It's getting a bit long in the tooth now, with its 867mhz
processor, but with it being a Powerbook it still runs most
things more than adequately.

The "o" button sometimes doesn't work though, but that's it
really :)

the first modern Mac that i owned was a 2003 G3 iBook 900MHz
(the last of the G3 iBooks) which had a 12" screen. i then
went from that to the 17" G4 PowerBooks, and as much as i
loved the huge screen, i did miss the portability of the
ibook

when i actually saw the 12" G4 PowerBooks i was really
impressed with how compact they are :)

your G4 PowerBook shits all over the 900MHz G3 iBook though
:)

disk first aid didnt find any problems. Ive wiped the whole
thing clean and started again, so I guess if it goes wrong
again it must be a hardware problem. I'll get one of those
apps and hope everything is fine, thanks for the tips. I'm
not likely to give up macs any time soon
