how high can you hear?

if you have audacity or soundforge or whatever.
create a pure sine toon and keep going higher and higher
untill you can't hear anything anymore. do the test at a
constant volume.
and also write how old you are.

my highest was 19000hz. I could "feel" 19200hz though.
age: 21

try this. scroll down a bit. you'll see a bunch of
tones you can listen to.

set the sampling frequency to minimum 96k, there is nothing
looking like a 22k sine @ 44k.

I think mp3s for listeningtest is a bad idea, they'll
probably start making noises below the pitch and maybe
playback devices will too...

this reminds me of a new phone ring tone that i've heard
played during classes at my school recently.

it goes off, and it's really high pitched and annoying, and
all the students are like 'shut the fuck up!' and the
teachers can't hear a thing. causes a good ruckus :D

haha

some old woman we used to live near had some cat alarm thing
to scare cats out of her garden fited, and you could change
the frequency it used. and she set it at a level she couldnt
hear but everyone else in the street could hear, so everyone
had to put up with this high-pitched screech five times
every night until she changed it

Just as I thought, just looked at the mp3 of 20.000 hz with
the spectrum analyser and it starts to rise at about 12.000
hz. No wonder everyone can hear it. The test on the website
is useless.

well, I have repeated the same test using audio mulch.
still: 19,000 for me, according to common knowlege it is
nearly impossible for a human being to hear something above
20,000.

offline _gvarek_ from next to you (Poland) on 2006-08-07 04:20 [#01949971]

I don't think it's useless, I can hear the click at the
beginning of the sound, but then, when it continues,
I hear nothing. So it does not mean I have actually heard
the 20,000 frequency, just the "intro".

offline Laserbeak from Netherlands, The on 2006-08-07 04:36 [#01949977]
Points: 2670 Status: Lurker | Followup to _gvarek_: #01949965

- it's not the click, I can see the spectrum as it is
playing
- Audiomulch might not create a perfect sinuswave
- mp3s aren't realy suitable for high pitch testing

I could even hear the "20 khz" mp3 clearly on my very lofi
computerspeakers.

I'll see if I can make a better wavetest in csound

I can hear 21000 from that site, I'm 22...

I can't find out how to create sine waves in soundforge!
Audacity worked, but it refused to change the frequency.

24 KHZ
age 33

though i couldn't really distinguish much pitch variation
between the different samples

i would like to try this properly with a tone generator as i
have always known my range to go higher than a lot of
people's.
i used to have a sample on cd of a tone rising off the top
end of audible range then coming back in and dropping out
the bottom end etc...i could hear it for quite a while
after everyone else had put their hands up (to indicate they
could no longer hear)

the orb did something similar during a set at brixton
academy in around 1992

The site is wrong.

I opened up a ~osc in Pure Data and ran a sine wav 19000.
COuldn't hear it like i heard the one on that site. The mp3
compression fucks with it.

My results

Left ear: 18500
Right ear: 18000
Age: 24 1/2
