Hello,
I'm very interested in learning how to compose electronica, and psytrance in particular. However, I haven't the slightest clue where to begin. Can anyone point me in the direction of some good software and maybe even some tutorials to get me started?
Peace, - Sigvatr

Fruity Loops FL STUDIO Is a piece of software lots of people start out with. Some people stick with it, some people progress. There are tutorials in it, but there are also people here who use it and have mastered it that would help you with any questions, I'm sure. You can download the demo for v6 from the site there, where you can do everything (even save as .mp3 or .wav). The only thing you can't do is save project files, so you have to do all your work in one go. Unless you buy it, or crack it.

Download Re Birth.
It is soooo easy to get started and very good to learn all the important things at the same time (how to program a drum pattern, arrange a song). The results you will get from that program will keep you inspired and excited enough to continue making music :D
I find when starting, the hardest part is trying to get the damn machine to work. For most of us music makers, fruityloops at first glance is a walk in the park, BUT for someone who has no idea what it is, the software can still be like HOLY FUCK HOW DO I DO THIS.
I strongly suggest trying Re-Birth first, and then moving onto Fruity loops in a few months.

Is Psytrance the future of music? Most people would say no. I, for my part, think it's the only valid form of musical expression worthy of soundtracking the 21st Century.

Fruity loops is really confusing, and I can't find any good articles on the net. I think I might buy a book.

Most of this equipment and software will be confusing without guidance. Once you get the hang of it, and understand what all the knobs and controls mean, then it starts to make sense. Don't be too intimidated. Just take things slow. You probly aren't going to see immediate results. Its going to sound awfull, and you will spend more than half your time pulling out your hair trying to figure out whats not working and what is.
Anyways, its best to start off with something like, like rebirth or storm studio. That will allow you the tools to make your psytrance, and learn what to do, so you can move on to more mature tools. Rebirth is free, and once you master those sequencers, everything else should be a breeze.

While there's not as much to learn about fruityloops as many other composition programs, I've always found the features that it DOES have to be counterintuitive. The fact that you are forced to create loops, then arrange the loops into a song is ludicrous and inexplicable. I'd recommend checking out reason. The tutorial it provides in the help file is very good, and the whole program just plain makes sense. The only trouble is it doesn't support VST's (unless you do some shit in conjunction with another program), but don't let that worry you at this point.

Your suggesting reason as an alternative to a counterintuitive sequencer?!?
Thats the one thing that everybody complains most about reason.
With floops, its pretty easy to make your loops, copy them and change what you need.

i agree. i have floops and reason and use logic as well and find it a lot easier to do what i want in fruityloops. if i do use reason it is generally to make combinator patches and then rewire it back in to floops. although having said that i found reason a lot easier to start using then floops. when you open up floops it seems like a pile of shit.

True. Nowadays, when I use a computer, I will either open up reaktor or reason. A lot of that has to do with the interface tho. I like wires and jacks and knobs. I kind of overkilled with floops too.

However, a friend showed me ableton live the other week. I am kind of thinking of buying a laptop to slave to my mpc for chord programming in ableton, and patch storage.

thats my mates setup. mpc, laptop, ableton, some NI plugins. was using it the other day. he has some problems with ableton and the mpc communicating though. mapping notes on to random pads rather then in the proper order.

Don't people wake up and say "I'd like to make music" anymore?
Who the fuck feels inspired to make the same boring crap everyone else is doing?
"HI I FEEL LIKE MAKING A HIP HOP TRACK! LEWLS"

They don't map to random pads. But drum maps don't go in the logical order, as far as notes are concerned, so it will seem confusing. He can change what note is supposed to be assigned to what pad if he wants. It takes some time tho.
I don't want to even use vst plugins. Thats an easy trapfall for me. I get too many plugins, and then get swamped with trying to figure out what I want to make music with. Plus, I like the sound I can get with hardware more.
