my hard drive has been making odd noises in the last couple od days, it emits sort of like a succession of 'beeps' which last for some 15 seconds and then reappear again after about 5 minutes. If I reboot then they stop and don't come back until some random point the next day...
my hard drive is only about 4 years old, and I can't find anything on the internet about this, as the noises are definately notes rather than clicks.
any ideas on what they could be, and why they suddenly started happening?

your hard drive is attempting to time travel without a proper flux capacitor

there is a mouse called flunky who lives inside your hard drive, everyday he chews on more wires-but he does this cos he is hungary.
throw a piece of cheese inside your computer and all will be well again.

I had a 5 year old hard drive in one of my computers that was doing that until it died a couple months ago. It would click and THEN beep, once or twice a day.
It had been doing that for... about 3 years. Without dying. It wasn't an important drive so I just sort of left it and laughed at it. But I'd be worried if I were you.

if your hard drive is making the noises, it's not your modem.

Keep hoping if it makes you feel better, but you ARE going to back dat ass up... right?
My clicking/beeping hard-drive lasted 3/10s of decade but if my master drive made a peep right now, I'd freak out. ACT NOW.

If there's anything of reasonable size you absolutely NEED to save, upload it to a site like megaupload or whatever so you can download it again if your drive croaks. Just in case.

oh god yes! Can't believe I didnt think of that. Thanks a lot!
the noises were furious for some 10 minutes a while back but seem to have stopped for the day. It's very odd. Perhaps it has something to do with overheating? I know for a fact my fan is slightly dicky and it is quite hot here in London... what do you think?

That reminds me of the time horsefactory told someone that they were going to die within seconds

My computer has been making weird beeping sounds. I opened the side panel and put a big fan next to it. Now it is fine.
It could be overheating, see.
