I just downloaded Spaced Season 1. It's all one big avi
file. Half way through, however, the audio and video slips
out of sync.

What would be the best tool to fix this? Would I be best
advised to split up the single avi into a series of episodic
movies, before embarking on an attempt to fix the sync?

You could use virtualdub to re-encode sections of the file
with any available codec provided the audio is really in
sync and it's just played back wrong. If the audio is out of
sync because it's been badly encoded you may need some more
pro video editing software where you can split both audio
and video into sections separately and move them about. I'd
use vegas video, because that's what I've got. and it would
work.
