[Contest] Mastering!

This is a spin off from the mastering thread.
Someone had the idea of us all having a go at some
"Mastering" to see who does the best job, thought I would
start the thread cause I want this to start!

I`m gonna prepare some files, and maybe if phobs is cool
with it, we can have the XLTRONIC POLL be the judge.

The guidlines are CD MASTERING. So nothing higher then 16
bit (-insert super nintendo joke here-) please.

Software and Hardware used for the job must be listed! Sorry
top secret aphex kiddies.

Check back here in a couple of hours!

IMO you should do one with vocals and one with just
instruments... to see how people deal with EQ'ing. I
think it's easy to bury whole sections by trying to sweeten
vocals or vis-versa

No, this is actually a pretty interesting idea. I wouldn't
mind having a go at it. Not that I'd be very good at it, but
it's worth a try.

I might be down, depends on when the files are posted and
how long we have.

hahah you guys are too cynical. the real probelm with this
competition is that mastering is incredibly dull

I don't know how many people are going to enjoy A/Bing
multiple entries, and noting the EQing or side-chain
compression techniques.

"oh wow, he boosted around 2k, and cut at 300hz!, thats so
much better then so and so's, he only boosted slightly at
2k, and didn't even touch the 300hx range!"

You think people are going to sit there, sync up all the
entries, and flip between them as they play, to see which
one they like the best? Except extreme cases (of either bad
or good mastering) listening to an entire track, then moving
on to the next, isn't going to give a good comparison.

imo.

offline Dannn_ from United Kingdom on 2006-07-05 18:15 [#01932773]

well someone could compile them into one track which flips
between them, it could be anonymous too. id be interested to
hear but im sure i wont be able to tell any difference

also the use of "crazy cocks" provides a fascinating insight
into the mind of _belch.

If there was a way of mastering oxygenfad's nobby breakcore
without actually having to listen to it, I might be up for
the challenge.

easy: just turn your speakers off and apply the effects you
think would do the trick.

Yes, just compress the fuck out of it and put an EQ curve
that ruins the midrange, makes the high end sound tinny and
makes the bass murky. Add a very slight amount of reverb and
there you have it. A "Fuller, louder" master. :P

haha yeah

I will master my next tune without listening to it

add to that the fact that I know nothing about mastering and
fun could be had!
