The World Cup has killed Football.

In my opinion this world cup has totally ruined the game.
the big players (the likes of Ronaldinho and Lampard) have
totally failed to perform on the world stage, the English
side once again hasn't performed anywhere close to the
standard they should be at, and now we're left with the
dirty Italians who have brought the concept of diving to a
new low, the Portugese who have done likewise, and the
French.

then you look at how much Sven Ericsson is being paid a year
(£8million plus) just to sit on the toucline watching the
matches and sipping some water, it's exasperating. Should he
not be making inspirational substitutions and shouting at
the players to rally them? Then look at how much
Ronaldinho's being paid per game - £80,000+ ...it's such a
sorry sight to see.

since the group stage (where granted the African sides did
themselves proud) all the matches have been disinteresting
and at times so bad I've even had to switch them off. The
referees haven't helped either, they've been shocking! And
the play-acting from great players such as Henry (vs Spain)
and Grosso (vs Australia) is sickening to see.

I'm physically disgusted by it all, and surely can't be the
only one who feels this way (?)

haha, football is awesome..and this world cup was
awesome..the toughest teams came furthest..nothing wrong
with that. italy had a bit of luck against australia, but
that's hardly their fault.

not sure where you aim at with how much they're getting
paid..take a look at actors..pop stars..popular stuff pays
well :)

there's no more place for romantic in football it seems, but
i like to see it tough..zidane manages to show how you can
play beautiful in this tough game as well..

italy had a bit of luck!? Where is the luck in throwing ones
self over a defender in an oscar-winning piece of acting
despite not even being touched, rolling about on the ground
three times for good measure and then winning a totally
undeserved penalty kick in the dying seconds of a match
against a little side which ahd played so well just to keep
it at 0-0?? Of course it's their fault!

What is the point of having a major tournament every four
years to show everyone The Beautiful Game if all the big
teams are going to resort to cheating in order to win?!

that's hardly their fault..if that was the case ref should
send italian player out and not give them a penalty instead.
i too would like to see this silly dives erased from
football, but as long as they won't allow refs to decide on
those situation through reply, stuff like that is going to
happen. anyway, australians weren't able to score, so they
shouldn't be too bitter about it :)

the day video is used for arbitrating, italy will quit
football. they're all fake players. if you look at zidane or
ronaldinho, they actually try to keep the ball when they
meet an opponent, they don't fall down like autumn leaves,
as most italians do (and ronaldo).

but i guess everybody's against italy anyway ^^

how is this due to the world cup killing football? how has
this caused the world cup to kill football? what does it
have to do with the world cup killing football?

for such a long post, it seems like you just fucking whine

I agree with you in a certain way.. I don't like to repeat
myself but I'll do it one more time.

It's how modern football is nowadays, most teams even train
in diving. If there is someone to blame it's the refereeing
as they award it with a free kick.

This way of "smart playing" is something to deal with unless
the FIFA allows a 4th official in front of a few monitors to
see if it really is a foul.

Yesterday the Mexican who refereed the Italy vs Germany
match did an awesome job by letting the match play on most
of the time. After 15 minutes both teams realized it had no
sense to dive and the result was an entertaining match.
The Portugal vs Holland match was a disaster because the
referee totally ruined it by wistling for literally every
dive.. and the Portuguese are very talented in diving so
they won the match as the ball hardly circulate during the
match, something Holland needs to get into the match.

It's "smart" football and certainly not honest/fair
football.

reffing has been absolute shit, the incorrect offside calls
going to brazil killed me, of the 4 goals i saw while
watching them, 3 were obvious offside. it was asif they knew
it wasn't going to be called offside, so they just pass it
to an offside player and the receiver will wait a little
beyond the last defender. fuck, i could go on and on.

diving is shit, kids in australia get beat up for pretending
to be hurt in favour of an umpiring decision at school. i
won't be watching any more soccer for a while.

It was a fun game this evening when the ref just kept the
game going. After 15 minutes everyone realised
diving/cheating isn't going to help. The referees need a
kick. Video replays with each decission would make it as
crap as 'American Football' travelling 10 yards with big
muppet suits protecting them from the actual game.

'australians weren't able to score, so they
shouldn't be too bitter about it :)'

was first time i got into soccer/football. was fun staying
up late and such to watch our team go so far. i didnt expect
australia to win the world cup or anything, but its so hard
to have them lose over an incorrect penalty and not get just
abit bitter.

surely the ref can be on his own, but if something was
obviously wrong, just have someone talk to him on a little
headset intercom saying 'nah that wasnt a penalty!'.

[WHAT I DON'T UNDERSTAND]

Why all you australians don't say that the red card of
materazzi was an error? We played most of 2nd time in 10
men, and you weren't able to score a goal. Ok, you can have
doubts about penalty, but you can't have doubts about red
car, totally a wrong decision.
I think Australia played a very great world cup, but I think
Italy deserving to play the grandfinal next Sunday. I hope
you all will support us during that match.

italy wasn't any better than australia in that match. they
both had bad luck with ref and thats that. sometimes a
little luck is needed.

this is all bollocks. everyone is diving these days,
everyone is overpaid these days, the italy vs germany game
was perhaps the only world cup classic we have had this
world cup so far. cannavaro has been probably the best
player of the world cup, pirlo is an extremely elegant
player.

EVERYONE is diving nowadays, it is bloody time that you
english reached a fucking final or at last a semi final
instead of attacking anyone that does. if grosso dived for
the penalty, so did a million other players this world cup,
and in the same match, materazzi was sent off for kicking a
PLAYER FROM HIS OWN SIDE, ZAMBROTTA. how fair is that? in
the first half, italy could have been easily scored 4 goals,
but at the start of the second half, the referee incorrectly
sent off materazzi. how is that for a bad decision?

and i repeat, england, fucking win something or at least
reach some semi final before going back (again and again) to
the lazy fucking moaning and whining about football being
ugly, and not realizing that english football sucks hairy
balls.

'Why all you australians don't say that the red card of
materazzi was an error?'

cos italy won in the end. the reffereeing error that
australia got costed us our game. now we've lost our big
guus. i dont know what the future holds, but i say that
couldve been australias one chance at it for a long time. oh
well.

when i say the refereeing should be fixed up for football,
im not just saying it so australia can win. but for
everyone. so of course i know why italy are going on about
an unfair red card. that said, i feel alot of australians
have stopped caring about the world cup now and wont be
cheering italy on :D

of course they wont be cheering italy, but if you see the
action well. and not passively, and notice carefully th
eposition of the referee upon the penalty action, you can
note that it was impossible for him not to give the penalty.
from where he was it was a very very very clear penalty.
before you go on, watch the replay again and note the
position of the ref. bear in mind that the referee doesnt
have 30 cameras accompanying his decisions like we have in
front of the telly.

offline tolstoyed from the ocean on 2006-07-06 06:21 [#01932947]

the thing is out of 10 refs 2 would maybe call that
penalty..it wasn't a ref fault, it's just that most ref
wouldn't call it a penalty if they were in that position.

but yeah, australians didn't deserve to continue nothing
more that italy. italy always struggles but comes far..that
takes effort too.

as for english..im not that fond of them but they had a
better chance if rooney wasn't sent off..at this level every
detail matters. and as you can see rooney wasn't sent of
because of faul but because he said something to ronaldo who
was really shit in that situation.

offline xkejjer from Malta on 2006-07-06 06:24 [#01932949]
Points: 274 Status: Lurker

listen, did you see the replay or not? from the position the
ref was in, 9 out of 10 would have called that a penalty,
because the ref didnt see it like you or me saw it, he saw
it from one particular position, not 20 camera angles.

also, italy in this world cup just really struggled against
the USA and in the second half of the australia game, when
they were with one man less, that's all. it was a cakewalk
against ukraine, and the germans didnt worry buffon much,
but it was a very balanced game with the italians totally
destroying germany in the 30 minutes of extra time though.

the best 4 teams of this world cup were (no order) italy,
germany, france and argentina.

and rooney was sent off because of his silly retaliation.
even if it wasnt exactly a headbutt, it is still a
retaliation. a great player he might be, but he's a great
player with the mind of a fucking baboon.

how can you tell with such certancy what ref saw?..

imo best team is obviously france who is obviously the only
team that could have sent home brazil.

i find it hard to belive rooney knew who's balls he kicked
there..it was more of momenta thing..if someone else was in
carvalhos position he'd get a kick in the nuts imo. that was
a faul for which should he be sent off, but if ronaldo
wasn't such a prick rooney would stay on and it would have
been a more even match. ronaldo sure didn't get any new fans
with that move.

i wrote this big long rant, but i shelved it, cos there's no
point.

there are always a few questionable calls along the way, but
i really think stuff like that is part and parcel of what
makes the world cup so wikkid: everything happens so quickly
and everything has significance and nothing ever goes
according to plan. teams who are equipped to seize their
opportunities can and almost always will find some way to
scratch their way to the top.
