Superman Returns

I'm a right royal cynic when it comes to superhero movies
these days, not thinking much of x-men, spiderman was just
about ok, hulk and all the other minor ones sucked ass and
batman begins tried but failed in my book.

But "superman returns"has a real charm to it that sucked me
right in. The actor was great as the s man and clark kent
and showed a lot of subtle Reevesness that paid off (except
he has use of the spine). The pace was just right, spacey
was perfect for lex (no-one can come close to hackman so why
even try and compare them) and the lois lane angle was
great.

There was enough references to past s-man films to give me
a warm fuzzy feeling but unlike a lot of
films/sequels/remakes they weren't ironic or all-knowing
obvious winks.

So i give it 8/10 for a jolly good charming yarn with a few
twist and turns and a real nice pace to it.

2 points missing for an over the top intro crrdits and for
not showing us any of the missing s-man years (perhaps
another film?)

This could be the start of an nice little franchise.

I concur. I went to it more based off of how I enjoyed the
first two x-men movies than by wanting to see superman. It
was substantially more enjoyable than I was expecting. And
it had heart. Plus I didn't feel like punching kevin spacey
in that smug grin for this one. For once he actually seemed
to fit the part.

However, I also enjoyed xmen 1 & 2, spiderman and batman
returns.

Well, I guess they fit him, but I hated him in all of them.
He seemed like he was playing the same person every time,
and it always seemed like they were putting him in because
he's a popular actor, reguardless of who the character was.

No one does smug quite as good as Spacey.

Good movie, though I was sort of unsatisfied... everything
was sort of vague and things weren't really touched on.
Superman/Clark's respective self imposed exiles and the
weird reactions of people to their return, the entire random
evil plot itself and the ramifications... it seems like an
awkward swiss cheese story that will need some supplements
via a novel or some comics or something.

But I enjoyed it. It looked and sounded great, I was never
bored, and I actually wanted more despite the long running
time. Specifically, I wanted some more superheroism. Another
10 minutes or so of some actual Supermanning near the middle
would have bulked up the movie and gave Superman something
to do. He just sort of shows up, saves a plane, does shit
all, then nearly dies. Very little balance. It was pretty
underwhelming in that regard. No really viable threat...
they tried way too hard with the island premise and it just
wasn't engaging.

But yeah, I liked it. I hope General Zod or Doomsday or
somebody shows up in the sequel though. I want a tighter
narrative and a more traditional conflict. I didn't care
much for Routh/Bosworth's chemistry so I'm definitely in the
''needs more action'' camp. They're no Reeve/Kidder.

It seems like the late eighties/early nineties was the
golden age of action movies...
I fucken love that bit in XMen2 where Magneto has the prison
guard tricked into drinking metal filings then ripping him
apart to get the metal out and using it to waste all the
guards and escape. That scene has the perfect mix of
violence and a clever idea.
