1) a boring latency question

what causes latency for a computer music maker, i.e. when
you press the keys on your midi keyboard, it takes a long
time for the soft synth to respond. is it the sound card?
processor? keyboard? midi to usb converter? all? if you have
a problem with this, what can be done?

the solution:

buy a super computer

isnt it energy applied, over mass times temperature rise?

buy a new PSU (500W+) and a new heatsink and fan for your
CPU

the MIDI cables are too long. remember that electricity only
travels at 20 mph. you must shorten them

maybe get a soundcard that has a midi port so it doesn't
have to go through a usb controller. ??
just an idea, i wouldn't know.

RTFW = Read the fucking wiki on asio ->
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audio_stream_input_output

might give you a hint why professional musicians invest
money in expensive soundcards with asio drivers instead of
bullshit windows drivers.

btw just to brag, I have a latency of 2 ms on my comp :)

Well I dont really know what "causes" it but to solve it you
simply need an asio driver wich comes with all "real"
soundcards.
Then the more CPU you have the lower latency you can enable
but you should be able to come down to a decent latency even
without a super computer. here is a free asio
driver called asio4all wich is OK and should work if you
dont have access to an different asiodriver, try it.

yep, as _awt_ suggested, download asio4all. I reduced my
latency of my Extigy (which doesn't even support ASIO but
asio4all doesnt care about that !!) from about 100ms down to
about 6ms without any drop outs at all. Just install the
program and select which sound card(s) you want to use it
with. Then in any audio program you use just select ASIO as
the output. INSTANT LATENCY LOSS !

well if we're bragging and being nerd cunts, then my latency
is really little and i havent had to do anything it just
happened that way. but a friend of mine has many sleepless
nights over his. i will direct him to asio4all, thanks to
awt and mcbpete, i send you both a pumpkin tartlette next
halloween

Imagine an army-style assault course with climbing ropes,
pulleys and those walls with nobbles on, and two men racing
each other across it.

One man has to traverse all the obstacles on the assult
course (for there is a cache of scintillating jewels which
lies at the centre - enough wealth to make grown men weep
and Christian-ladies drop their knickers) whereas the other
man can just run along the ground next to it without a
single obstacle in his way and brute force will see him have
his fun with women.

Yet both men *must* reach the finishing post at the same
time or it will be bad and money will be lost and people
will laugh at the assault course designers and the ladies
kecks will stay firmly around their hips.

Each of the obstacles takes a little bit of time for the
first man to get past, and all the while the second man is
getting further and further ahead, waving a smug little wave
and smiling a smug little smile.

How good would it be if all the ropes were greased, the
ladders had catapults and the walls with nobbles on where
only 1ft high? Why, the second man would be there like a
shot, collect the jewels and still melt the ladies' frosted
charms.

your apartment

It's pure CPU speed. In a music prog, a lot is going on,
that's what causes latency. With a better CPU, there will be
less latency.

Wires might also make a difference too come to think of it
:p

actually there are two latency's

the first one is midi latency.
the second is sound latency.

the first is cause by too long midi cables, bad
potentiometers, or just a midi controller made on to slow
microprocessors. it can also depend on the amount of midi
channels used by one interface. but this latency should not
get above 2 ms or so.

the second type is sound latency. when midi is triggered,
the sound should appear. when you have a simple setup the
sound will appear at once because the processor has to work
just on one sound. if your setup gets bigger the processor
and soundcard have to create more sounds at once which
causes them to choke. you can delete this chocking by
highering up the latency which is nothing more like a delay
so that the processor can do his job and not sweat himself
to death

its a conspiracy to revive the soundcard market.

so yeah this isnt very conclusive. hopefully the asio thing
will help, otherwise maybe ill try my midi controller on his
computer and see if that makes any difference. then ill tell
him to get a new computer and soundcard.
