The 486 will have trouble playing a single .mp3 file! I can't think of anything the 486 would be good for today. I've had Rebirth running (just) on a P133 with an old soundblaster64 isa card.

I used to use Rebirth on a 486 DX2-66 with 8mb of RAM, no problems...

I used to run Screamtracker on my 486 DX2 with 8 mb ram. But see if you can run fasttracker2, that's much higher quality. that one was unfortunately not compatible wih the soundcard I had back then (pro audio spectrum 16)

I used to get loads of buffer under-runs even with long latency on the p133. Could have been the sound card though.

thanks for those guys ill check them out when I get home. Its for some work im doing with some kids. get 8 computers hooked up with software. Place speakers around the room. set all the software at the same BPM and let them wander around making noise on the idfferent machines. its likely to fall flat on its face though...

you can run rebirth 1.0 on that.
there's a fun app called "thonk" that you could probably run also, it processes soundfiles with a series of custom algorithms.

I second rogu rarebit's suggestion for the ol' FT2. Used that for years on my ol' 486 machine.

When I was little my mate had this music software on his Commodore 64, we couldn't figure out how to make tunes on it, but we made loads of crazy noises. It came with a plastic piano keyboard you stuck on top of the regular keyboard and you could only play one note at a time. (No chords)
