i'm looking into doing more trickery with my trusty mouse and computer... but not for synthesizers or samples... i'm wanting to manipulate beats into some concrete way, but i'm stuck on what to use...
what good software is out there for making fat beats that come off as sounding completely mental?

oh and this thread came about because i am listening to Autechre's "sublimit" right now and i have always been in complete amazement by this track. i love the way the beats are organized for our ears enjoyment.

Quoth, don't you have a machine drum? You could do sick things sending midi to it from something like max or puredata.

Ableton Live is a good all-around program for arranging loops, but I don't know if it's the best simply for beats.

pd tutorial to give you an idea.
If pd is overwhelming download the max demo and tutorials and see how much you can learn in a month before the demo times out. Max has the BEST documentation and tutorial material of any software ever. You can learn stuff from it that can be applied in any other modular programing type of software - pd, reaktor, etc

Reaktor as a standalone is great. You can do a lot of the same manipulative stuff as you can in max, with less of the work, and its more suited for electronic music.

The best way to do it is making some cool sounding oneshot samples and then sequencing everything in a midi-matrix within your favorite host..But you can also do the same with a (software) drum machine so that you can tweak the parametres of each sound along with the progression of the track if that's something you'd want.

The most interesting things in electronic music always come out of cheap, shitty, uncool equipment. Look at the 303. It was considered a piece of shit by 1988, because flashy digital synths like the DX100 had come out.
This little beauty is still my fave softsynth ever. (Don't get it confused with the inferior floops version)

Word. Music for me and a lot of other people has always been about an almaglomation of skill, creativity and expression. Take out the skill and creativity, and you loose a lot of what matters.
When the sum of something is greater than its parts, and it only has one part to speak of, then you don't have shit.

You mean for musicians because everyone's bored of that sound, or for programmers because everyone will use glitch vst instead of something else?

- horrible sound quality like a foil anus farting
- interface looks like it was intentionally designed to prevent inspiration
- "penis"
