Tomorrow (actually today) I put my thesis up for a review and I need help on one thing. I need to write an abstract on the contents of this work in english. I wouldnt even try to rise above my average level, if not fo r the fact that I'm resonsible for my part before two of my friends. We've written it together and each one guarantees that his part is done properly. So I'm asking the colective wisdom of XLT to tell me if this little abstract needs anything changed or even rewritten (the contents should not change:

This work is intended as an aid in learning about numerical optimization
methods. It is suited for a course consisting of computer-based excercises,
during which students acquire knowledge of the most wide-spread optimization techniques and will
be able to test their properties.
The package includes: suggestions of laboratory excercises, thorough
descriptions of avaiable algorithms and an educational application.
The proposed excercises involve testing the algorithms using various parameters
and objective functions, adjusting the parameters and analysis of the results.
The scope of this work is: constrained and unconstrained optimization,
optimization of univariate and multivariate functions, linear programming,
random, direct search and gradient optimization methods.

I'm mainly concerned about the enumeration in the last part and the second sentence

you need a word after "random" there at the end. Either that or use the word "randomness" if you are referring to the phenomenon of randomness. It's a dumb word, but I don't think there's any way around it

I was referring to random optimization methods (eg. genetic algorithms). That's what I was afraid of.

@@'during which students acquire knowledge of the most wide-spread optimization techniques and will be able to test their properties.'
I'd change this to:
'during which students will acquire knowledge of the most wide-spread optimization techniques and be able to test their properties.'
It's probably ok as is, but that slightly clears up the present/future tense.
@@The package includes: suggestions of laboratory excercises,
thorough descriptions of avaiable algorithms and an educational
application.
I guess 'the package' should be 'this package' to keep in line with 'this work' instead of 'the work' in the first paragraph. I forget the rule about whether a comma is needed before the last 'and' in a list of 3 or more. I think I see commas there more often than not when reading things in published books (applies to next 2 paragraphs too). I'd lose the colon after includes, and in the last paragraph too.
'constrained and unconstrained optimization (of something?)'
'direct search and gradient' = 'and direct search and gradient'
'random' = 'randomness'

wow, thanks m W m. I was hoping someone will go to such a length in correcting my mistakes. I've already repaired that present/future mixup, but wasn't going to touch the rest. You were really helpful.
I see scup_bucket was right with that randomness thingy. THanks to both of you.
BTW. good to see you back mWm.
