Today i was very bored and so i went about the arduous task of translating my name into a proper Japanese Kanji. It's quit easy to translate western names into Katakana you can even do it via this little website. Translating into Kanji is a very different matter becaus eyou either hvae to opt for a literal translation or look for words that sound like your name.
At firsti went with the sound-like style and as my sirname is Smith or "sumisu" in Japanese i used the kanji for Sumi and for Su but it ended up meaning something like master of corners!
In the end I opted for a literal translation and so Grant Smith became Idai Kajiya meaning great blacksmith.....
偉大 鍛冶屋
I am very chuffed as when i go abroad i have to use a wooden carving of my Japanese sirname to sign thinsg and ahving a cool kanji instead of the usual shit katakana will be sweet!
anyone with a pretty common western name want a translation?

"i used the kanji for Sumi and for Su" > there are 8 kanji that can be pronounced "sumi" and 100 that can be pronounced "su" (in some way or some other) in my dictionary. so maybe you can get something that can mean (or at least be interpreted as) something else than "master of corners".
my last name is szewczuk. i don't want it "japanesed". : )

You are of Polish descent? Szewczuk must be quite a pain abroad, I can't imagine people pronouncing it properly.

I live in Japan. But my Hanko (Japanese name stamp) is just some random kanji that my manager chose... not even sure what it means.
My name is Daniel ?????(Da-ni-e-ru).

All those question marks in the above post were hiragana characters before I hit the 'reply' button.

I quite like mine even though its pretty big although i can always drop the first name (偉大) and just have 鍛冶屋. Hopefully my manager will afree with its coolness! maybe he will even be impressed though i doubt it! I really wnat a hanko now, so cool like some medival lord with a stamp ring or something! very epic!
