i swear that the clap in Peacock Tail is one of the claps
from the Machinedrum SPS-1

anyone else reckon they've spotted a digital synth in one of
their tracks?

:)

It's a disgrace. A travesty! I'm never listening to another
boc record for as long as, well, maybe a few minutes.

there's absolutely nothing wrong with BoC using digital
synths, i'm sure that some of their textures most likely
involve some FM synthesis or some other digital method.

it's just that Peacock Tail is the first time i've been able
to pinpoint a particular sound to a piece of equipment,
since i own it

Ne-Yo used the snare/clap/snap sound from FL Studio in his
chart-topping songs. It's probbly one of the WORST sounds
ever, and it disgusts me greatly.

i know they use them all the time but i'd rather they didn't
to be honest. it doesn't really fit with their whole retro
image.

But... is it slightly less bad if they're hardware digital
synths instead of VSTis?

Yes.

I KNOW THAT TAXIDERMIST WILL AGREE WITH ME ON THIS POINT

yes i've had one for the past year.

i can't remember the exact machine, as all my equipment has
been carted off to my fathers in Birmingham due to my
homelessness which i am now thankfully out of at the moment,
but have no room for equipment yet :(

i miss my 909 :(

Quoth

don't get me wrong, i fucking LOVE the SPS-1...i wanna get
it UserWave upgraded, but i see they're out of stock.
hopefully by the time i can afford an upgrade they will be
available again.

and yes, i can't wait to get my hands on the 808. i have to
travel to Stoke-on-Trent to pick it up though, but well
worth it. cosmetically excellent and it's been MIDI-fied :D

When I'm listening to Boards of Canada I'm not thinking
about what equipment they're using. At all. Guaranteed. It's
the same for any music really. Except ones from the 80s that
use the "orch hit" and then I'm only thinking that I wish I
wasn't listening to it.

Aparently they used a computer to do some of geogaddi. I
wouldn't be suprised if they used one or two digital synths,
but I know most of thier stuff is analogue.

who cares if they use digital synths

ill never understand the whole analogue purity shit

ive own my fair share of both and theyre both good for
particular reasons

i hope their next cd has some speed injection and more
digital synth

their music sounds like it is emminating from a natural
spring in the mountain wherin lives a mollusk who doth play
upon an enchanted reed of spring quenched grass as the sun
sets behind a great stone cliff, casting it's shadow upon a
glacier stained red by the whimsical algae that dwell in
it's icy embrace. FACT.

Yeah, me too, but I didn't see anybody ragging on either in
this discussion.

What synths do you own/use? I want to start a gear
discussion.

Well, they've used NI stuff so it's not just hardware
digital. They've also mentioned that they use a computer for
sequencing sometimes. I also agree with Oscillik about the
fm sounds.

I remember someone posted something like, "if I find out
it's 2 blokes in a bedsit in Essex making the music on a
laptop, I'll be gutted". Funny how people consider it
important to the "image" of BoC what gear they use (rather
than just, like other artists, discussing it "out of
interest")

It's important to imagine where they work as well - in a
shed made of driftwood, dried moss and castoff blue and
orange bubble-windows from weird 70s architecture. They
can't just work in a regular studio. It's not right!
