Is guy like one of those Ian Curtis/Joy Division freaks?
Nice music, though. Honestly never heard anything like it before. I'll have to get around to getting an album sometime.
Liked the ceremony cover.

The song Muppet Face on La Foret is amazing. So is Bishop, CA on their new one.

Muppet Face is a juggernaut. I didn't really like that album but Muppet Face... geez. I Broke Up (SJ) from Knife Play practically puts me into cardiac arrest every time I listen to it.
Xiu Xiu are so hit and miss though... I can't listen to a full album, a lot of stuff that just falls flat, it gets annoying. But there's moments of sheer brilliance when the all the crazy elements converge.

Not a big fan, but the cover of Fast Car is mildly entertaining.

is everyone here just afraid to say something sucks anymore?
no offense, but i can't even listen to the samples to find out if there's anything good, they're so bad. i can deal with bad vocalists (i enjoy A Silver Mt. Zion), but what is the appeal of someone meandering around the keyboard of a badly treated piano? i don't get it.

taste is relative. I'm sure many people think GYBE is just as bad too.

i know, i'm just surprised that so many people on all these topics are all thumbs up about these things. it doesn't seem to make sense. i would expect people to have bad reactions if i made a topic about TV on the Radio or something like that.

Well beyond it being all relative, I'd suggest it has something to do with context, an understanding of the history of music genres, a relationship with lyricism, its general affect, the need for mood, implications of personal violence, etc.
As for Xiu Xiu, someone had to do it. It might not be "good" per se, but it was certainly necessary. Considering this alongside the above criteria, someone like Merzbow comes to mind. And yes, ASMZ too. There's Pop music. And there's Entertainment Music. And then there is Indy Music. And then there is Music for art's sake. I'd say Xiu Xiu falls inbetween the latter two.
I think people here are all "thumbs up" on this because they understand these kinds of things and can relate to these distinctions. Some people might just actually like it too.
