i was hoping everyone could name at least 5.
because i would have to think real hard to come up with 5 really good ones and it's kind of awful..
i'd say chosen lords, untilted, dataplex, and then i would have to think really hard..

depends what sort of list you are looking for... if it has much to do with idm over the last few (2 or 3) years i have no fucking idea what i'd say. but i'm not really qualified anymore i guess... fallen out of the fold as the good book says... a lot of albums that i had hopes for have fallen short in the long run.

the idm was sort of the driving force 5 years ago or so wasn't it? to me it looks like only the big names are still able to produce something that stands out of all the generic stuff. and electronica/idm was one of the most promissing if not the most promissing thing in music 5 years ago..aphex and autechre for ever :)

Yeah, it's like you'd hear IDM style sounds in jingles and pop tunes. I really felt like it was gonna break through and all the electronica peeps would be making dancefloor smashes and we'd all be living in the future. But, then (2001-2002 or so.) shitty retro guitar rock took over everything.

I think it needs to go back to the dancefloor, be a bit more minimal and funky, then spend five years getting all complicated and "intelligent" again.

It's lie art, say, Abstract Expressionism, at first it's "Wooah, the hell is that... it's like painting.. but not, it's fucky... I like it". More than 50 years on people are still doing it going "Ta-dah! I've done an Abstract Expressionist painting!" - pfff, ok, lovely. But, not the same. However, other people do Other things, and the pioneers go on to do weirder things to differing degrees of success. This is the way of the world.

I think the future lies is in little scenes like dubstep and grime because those people aren't trying to be artsy or experimental, but they're still doing something fresh because that's the way those scenes move forward. In ten years time, you'll have a load of geeky americans making "grimecore" records, and buying vintage playstations on ebay to make beats with for "authenticity".

You think wrong. 'Grime' was over before it began. It's a daft name for dancehall with white boys ruining it in hoxton.

Music is so dark, dour and pissy, lately. I think all the throwaway Rave classics tossed out of so many bedrooms .. a million years ago, would serve as a good guide to a nicer future.

i think i know what you mean and tend to agree. unfortunately the most common way out (also for quite some of that pioneers) nowadays seems the way back. i can't really enthusiastically embrace this new retro fashion AS a fashion. i mean ok, after all people should just do what they love and i still believe that in the end that's the only apporach to do "authentic" art and if that means still mangling with a tb 303, so be it. but as an aesthetic agenda, i dunno, i really can't find it any less "pathetic" to emulate dance music from the 80s than the "IDM" styles established 10-5 years ago...
on the other hand i think it's quite natural for new artists to get to know themselves and their possibiliets through first trying out concepts that were already there, i guess just about any band started up with some coversongs, just like any classical player/composer went through some standards first and so on, so i don't see that as soo problematic...
or there's as always the eclecticist approach like with the beforementioned jackson, mixing modern technique with a retro fashion... cheerful music, for sure, but fresh, hm... (also i thought he was rather so/so live)... or lidell could be another example i guess...

but untilted was by no means minimal, was it? ok, a more simple and coherent sound design, but looking at song lenghts and sometimes the amount of musical-structural turns therein it rather seems to me they entered their "prog rock" phase ;P

no, i have certainly not! it's one of my favourite moments on the album :)... but sublimit is a good example, that part comes in quite surprisingly and soon wears of already to make space for that build up with the lush melody at the end and stuff
