I quite liked it. It's not music I'd listen to when I want
to listen to it but for for something in the background
whilst reading it was perfect.

It's not mindblowing but it's listenable. i'm gonna name the
style lap-folk, (if you write for pitchfork feel free to use
it).

I think/hope this is yorke getting out of his system the
aestethic he discovered in the kid a/amnesiac sessions and
explored later in hail to the thief.

i hope so cus i'm not a big fan of yorke making this kind of
stuff. so i hope he gets bored of this lap-folk thing and
starts writing cool songs again.

there's a couple of catchy songs in the album also.

and this album is so obviously not about beats so stop
saying it's idm wannabe or whatever. closest thing in idm to
this record (that i can think of) is tender buttons and
that's still a very different approach.

first track: 6.9/10 (and the ending of the song sharpens my
appetitte). all the sweet ingredients are here: vocal
harmonies (choruses!), the plucked melody, catchy refrain...

it's quite lackluster actually, it already sounds tired upon
the first listen, like he was very consciously trying to
achieve that sound, thus sounding laboured and stunted.

over all this is an alright release. not amazing or
anything. but not bad. i much prefer radiohead as a band
to this. but it's good.

i liked it at first, but its really really growing on me. 5
or 6 amazing songs. he seems to trail off sometimes... like
hes launching into a huge radiohead style anthem but then
just doesnt. e.g. "we think the same things at the same
time..." on harrowdown hill feels like its going to get huge
and then it goes back Yorkey mumbling. i like it tho

This is definitely a grower album. On second listen now..
really nice melodies. They're songs and singing with
electronic textures like Kid A but with untreated vocals and
clearer melodies. Fav tracks are: The Eraser, Harrowdown
Hill and Cymbal Rush

it all sounds like more of the same to me. he has about 4
ideas about what he can do with electronic music and has
already reused those a couple of times on the last 3
Radiohead albums, so why not reuse them yet again on this
solo thing.

not folk, lap-folk folks.

cus it's like folk in the way the songs are composed but it
uses computery thingies instead of guitar. like he goes with
his lap top and writes songs with it.

lap-folk

...i like the songs, the atmopshere, the sounds but don't
like how its mixed --->screw nigel

....i also like the nine inch nails connections...the
eraser..and how trent sounded like radiohead on with teeth's

I've listened to it a couple of times now and I think it's
OK but nothing overly special. I have always liked Thom's
voice so that is a big plus but in terms of the music itself
it just does grab me.

When I listen to ae etc. there is an almost organic aspect
to even the most mechanical of patterns something this album
doesn't display at all. It's average music with average
loops and average usage of DSP...the addition of the vocals
is the only thing that somewhat redeems it.

No doubt it will be hailed as a pioneering classic by people
who don't really listen to electronic music, but really I
think it is about a 6 out of 10 effort.

To me its more of a song based album with electronic
additions, rather than an electronic album with vocal
additions. That's just the one track I've heard though.

well i'm starting to really enjoy this now. but yeah, not
really as a pure electronic release. I really like "The

sounds like a bunch of unnecessary electronic bits and
pieces

much like hail to the thief

hopefully this will get the electronics out of yorke's
system for the most part and they can get back to a ok
computer sound again

Just got this yesterday i really like it. It's very subtle,
all very soft and quite minimal. I think its nice. The
Eraser and Atoms for peace are ace in my book. I think it's
gonna be a slow burner though untill th vocals sink into
your cerabelum and nead you inner brain like dough!
i like it thumbs up!

This makes me want to try out Hail To The Thief, which I
have avoided so far for some reason... All in all, Eraser is
a nice interlude, but hopefully Thom either 1) gets on with
lush Radiohead sounds or 2) gets beyond the amateur phase of
tinkering with electronic equipment.

Well, maybe on his solo follow-up he'll achieve more also in
terms of production.

A whole lot of 'classic' Radiohead songs are very simple
arrangements. Its just the same here, surely. Just using
electronics like he would any other instrument.

I agree that Radiohead, to classify as "pop", have to
entertain a certain aesthetics of simplicity. Always have.

Also don't get me wrong, this is a fun release. At best
sounds like a mixture of Pyramid Song and Idioteque.

However, by amateurish I mean the fact that without guitars,
drums, flutes and all that masculine bravado stuff that
allows for masterful solo interludes, there's nothing to
distract from the simplicity of the basic arrangement. Only
Thom's pretty vocals bring some "warmth" to the sound.
Somebody mentioned the prevalent "organic" sound in good
IDM. I think there are two reasons why this release is more
shallow than subtle:

1) Thom Yorke not having released tons of electronic
material in the past, which means he's "trying things out"
for the first time.

2) Production and engineering aided and abetted by Nigel
Godrich, whose purpose is to keep soundscapes palatable to
easy listening.

Add one and two together, and you have a flawed, if
interesting release. Maybe Thom doesn't see it that way, but
I hope he learns by doing.

i think you added 2 and 2 and got 5 (get it !!!!!!)
no seriously i don't think its fair to see "he's trying
things out" Radiohead have been producing electronic
influenced music since OK computer. The Fact is its just a
quiet album and NOT some IDM release. It seems people are
saying its "amaturish" just because it doesnt quite sit well
as an IDM album!

you're right, but people are always going to have different
expectations, man... i really enjoy it though, because like
you say, it's not really suitable as an "idm" album of any
sort... (plus i happen to just enjoy the music, i guess).
oh, fuck "idm" in it's ass.

also, there seems to be a lot of people who weigh it up
against radiohead albums, which is fair in itself (there's
always going to be a desire to put stuff up against other
stuff to analyze its quality), but i don't really think the
music is similar to warrant a relevant comparison. well,
whatever.
