People don't need to know how their PC works to be able to surf the Internet, but can society 'progress' these days if knowledge of science (and the scientific method) is so scarce?
Discuss.

interesting, i was thinking about this idea recently. i would say that there is definite power in those who feed us the technology. it's weird because there's so much around me that i take for granted. i use all these things without questioning how they work, and only really appreciate them on face value.

the general publics knowledge of science and scientific method has always been scarce, and it's.. is there a word besides progress that means moved in this sense? progress implies we're moving forward, and I don't really want to say that. anyway.. society has.. moved in some direction regardless, and there are a billion other things the general public don't know about that still moves within its sphere.
now I got to catch the bus

there are kind of like to levels to it though aren't there. most people don't specifically know how their pc works but more and more people are learning how software works and how to progress the technology through the tool that is their pc.

there's no doubt that we're domesticated. it's all part of evolution though. we're socialised into a society where technology is taken for granted but we still rely on it. in a way, it's not essential that we have to know everything about everything. in our society we only need a small percentage of people to specialise in something very technical.

i always get so many people telling me all kinds of things scientists have just proven and I wish just once in a while one of them would understand what science is. but i dont think its that important for people to understand science, you'll find theres very few people who actually understand certain things which are extremely important in science. you can never understand things in the detail you would like

Errr... Isn't that telling directions with a watch and the sun?
Unless the compass has some amazing chronological functionality I have been previously unaware of.....
The general uneducated masses might actually be dangerous if they knew about science and technology, so probably for the best that they don't know anything.

how can society progress if the general publics knowledge of basic mechanics is so scarce?
how can society progress if the general publics knowledge of construction techniques is so scarce?
how can society progress if the general publics knowledge of internal medicine is so scarce?
how can society progress if the general publics knowledge of religion is so scarce?
how can society progress if the general publics knowledge of clinical psychology is so scarce?
how can society progress if the general publics knowledge of proper procedures for keeping a restaurant kitchen clean is so scarce?
you're just one of many who believe what you do is so fucking superior that everyone should know what it's about for society to progress. science isn't in any "special position" in any way and demanding people to know what the scientific methods are is just silly!

I've met people who believe that platon thinks that the idea of the perfect snail exists in the world of ideas. I've also met people who believe they can revert christians by telling them "facts about the world" (it's a particularly silly student organisation). also, most people I know haven't the slightest clue as to how they should construct even the most basic structure.
how in the world is knowing if a star is a gas ball going to affect anyone but a.. I don't know the english word.. astronomer maybe?

i'd consider that basic knowledge. not really a matter of it affecting anything or anyone. Everybody knows they need to breathe oxygen to survive. Why? it's just a gas. Can't see it, taste it, hear it etc so why need to know the name?

and.. eh.. I wouldn't call believing that a star is another thing like our sun scientific either... it's rather common knowledge, so I think those people you talked to, ez, may already have believed that, but then someone have convinced them otherwise.

its not so much that knowing these facts is important, its that people base a lot of decisions on science they quite openly don't understand
what i think is more odd is that most people dont know where their money is or how their pensions work or why its important to clean your cutlery properly or how to stop safely if your brakes fail or how secure their credit card details are when used online or at least roughly how a drug works before taking it

I agree with your point about so many people not understanding/caring about things like how their pension/mortgage/loan works, their legal rights, the weekly checks they should perform on their car/bike, their health, etc.
There are also so many basic "practical" skills that involve little/no science that people cannot do themselves and instead are prepared to pay over the odds for someone else to do; wheel changes on cars, landscape gardening, furniture moving, painting and decorating, etc.
We seem to have gotten into a bizarre situation where knowing how to do these things is somehow seen as a bit "geeky" (when in reality, they're the antithesis of geekiness) and not desirable to learn.

I know that my scientific education has given me great perspective on the significance, and relative insignificance of my own existence. I am not a religious man, but knowledge of science gives me great appreciation for the astounding coincidence that is life. copy and paste: We usually perceive our world, our way of living, as beautiful because there is nothing else to perceive. If one lives in this world, the globalized world of high technology, all one can see is one layer of commodity piled upon another.
In our world the "original" is the proliferation of the standardized. Copies are copies of copies. There seems to be no ability to see beyond, to see that we have encased ourselves in an artificial environment that has remarkably replaced the original, nature itself.
We do not live with nature any longer; we live above it, off of it as it were. Nature has become the resource to keep this artificial or new nature alive

"I know that my scientific education has given me great perspective on the significance, and relative insignificance

this is an interesting point. but depending on you as a person, couldn't it be just the other way? that all being relative could render everything relativley small and worthless... think about social darwinism etc...
