Ableton as a production tool?

Can Ableton be used as a production tool beyond sequencing
samples? i.e. can you sequence vstis, get a piano roll,
sequence beats, etc in it?

I'm thinking of buying it but can't seem to find a straight
answer on Google. I'd like to be able to produce tracks in
their entirety in Ableton and then take them live. It'd be
great to be able to do all this in one piece of software.

I have used it to sequence, and also make tracks, but it
feel more difficult than FL. Think there's som great
possibilities in that program though

you can indeed sequence midi data and play it with vsts and
such, but as for a good beat sequencer, i havent been able
to find a good method, but im still merely toying with it
myself.

I can't stand it as a sequencer its so clumsy and overly
"mac-ish" you know the way programmes try to look all sleek
and cool. It gets right on my upper decker wobble checkers.

Ableton will DEFINITELY do this. You can sequence piano
rolls, etc, then paste them on to the arrangement view to
make songs, or the other way round.

if you want to make drums just put in the Impulse
Midi plugin and throw in the wav's you want to use for
drums. Then you just use the piano roll for the sequence

download the demo and play. it has VST support, a piano roll
for sequencing (use the Simpler to sample things), a drum
machine to drop kicks, snares, hats, etc. shit's got
everything you need!

i paid for my copy and i am a very proud owner.

yes.

not really a step sequencer if thats what you are looking
for. it can be easily rewired to reason though. it has a
piano roll kind of thing in it however. If you have ever
used Acid, it is very similar. I sequence beats in it
simply by arranging them, like dragging and dropping the
wav's. of course it is farrr superior to Acid. you can
also use envelopes to re arrange playback of your loops.

you can do pretty much all production in Live. I prefer to
do my post production/mastering in a wave editor like
soundforge though.

It has Impulse, an 8-part sampler.

i use ableton with fruityloops as well as my hardware. I
used to use logic but I much prefer ableton, there is a lot
less fannying about

Hey, I can only manage to record midi knob twiddle
automation to the arrangement. Is there a way to record it
to midi clips in the scene view?

you can only record midi 1-127 to clips, not vsti automation

offline Aunty from Llangefni (United Kingdom) on 2006-05-25 17:56 [#01907134]

you can assign midi 1-127 to the vst parameters though

Best new member award goes to aunty! So I use the VSTi's
midi learn instead of Live's parameter mapping panel, then
record the midi into the clip, and it seems to work.

Eeeeeehxcellent.
