i suppose they should all run under rosetta anyway?

Actually for slsk purposes, there's SoulSeeX, which is
much easier to install/use than Nicotine, and it's a
Universal Binary too!

i run some of those programs on ubuntu (linux) and they are
quite shit. in my opinion, windows has way better software,
except for the obvious downside that it always gets
viruseses and explodes. dunno about macs. i think the best
thing is to get windows and never plug it into the internets
for any reason. :)

especially Audacity - HORRIBLE. i have so many stories
about how shit this is. it should not be trusted for
anything remotely serious with music.

haven't had any trouble with Nicotine to speak of. but i
also don't run it on a mac.

my point is that just because they are free and open-source
doesn't mean they measure up to stuff you buy for windows.
sometimes you're better off paying for a better product and
being really careful.

and essential is Max when you want to encode your
cd's the right way (don't use iTunes!). Max is like EAC, but
only better.

and go here to find your own cool stuff

I really hate audacity too, I find it really clumsy and
unstable. I use SoundStudio2 which I love but I have a
tendency to make it crash by having hours worth of aiffs
open at once. SoundStudio3 is out and claims to do all the
same things as audacity (time stretching and multiple
channels most notably) but its really unstable for me. These
are only availble as 30day trials btw.

goDel - whats bad about itunes ripping? this strikes me as a
problem that mainly affects geeks cause it seems okay to me

peak is about the best audio editor i've found on mac, it's
still no soundforge, i find it ridiculous that many
functions don't have a preview of the sound you'll make
before you process it.

ive found a few bugs in audacity 1.2.3, but it gets the job
done
i like the fact its got nyquist as a backend

my point is that just because they are bought for windows
doesn't mean they measure up to stuff that is open source.

The most important reason not to use iTunes for ripping your
cd's to mp3 is that you can't encode using LAME or it's
presets. I could name some more, but i shouldn't have to.

i installed mac os x 10.6.4 on my dell laptop and it didn't
go as well as planned :/

although some nerd in CS in college got it to work perfectly
on his, on mine the sound and graphics were kinda fucked.

so, the general jist of this, is that i'm extremely envious
of you, and i'll give my friend johnl a tip off on this
thread and he;'ll have lots of stuff to reccomend no doubt

it's a fucking sexy OS though, so many cool features

my friend has one of those powerbooks, it has fucking light
sensors, FUCKING LIGHT SENSORS, just where the speakers are,
so when you open it up at night, and the room's all dark, it
lowers the monitor brightness accordingly so you don't burn
your fucking eyes out

genius

I used iTunes-LAME for a while, but i prefer MAX. Probably
because i had to compile my own version of LAME to get it to
work (and that it wasn't a universal binary). With MAX you
can also rip to flac, ogg and whatnot. and it's a standalone
converter too. just drag a flac into the window and an mp3
pops out! its magic!

Umm, MAX always tell me that it needs one or more output
formats, even though I have checked mp3 when I want to
convert flacs for portable mp3 action. am I doing something
wrong?

uhm, i remember getting that message too and having dealt
with it. but i can't remember how. i think it had something
to do with using the encoder window instead of the converter
window, or vice versa...

Also;

Firefox or Camino - Camino is native and lightweight.
Oh and check the dashboard widgets you can dload, I find the

while in progress. it'll do for now. thanks anyway

new mac = pc but more stable. installing windows on the new
mac core duo is easier and crashes less than it does on the
pc [pure crap]. i've been pc for the last 12 years and am
going back to mac when the new cpu's hit the desktops.
[three months possibly]. advantage...3 motherboards to
design for as opposed to the pc's 5 000 000 configs.

the new mac can either dual boot or you can boot windows in
a window. currently only the low - high end lap tops and the
kiddy comps have the new setup. logic + pluggo + mac =
solid.

i still like my pc...so much cracked shit out there for it
:)

it always seems like using mac osx is such a chore... i just
can't condone the lack of any sort of separate window system
for multitasking. i have to use them in the computer center
at university sometimes and it takes so much longer for me
to get anything done. they look pretty, but i prefer
windows.

i dunno, in my experience Mac OS X is far better in
multitasking. Running multiple programs at the same time on
windows hardly works at all. If you want to switch between
diff apps on a mac, use expose.

on a tangent: Windows Vista is going to look like a serious
OS X rip-off:
-aqua instead of quartz (sexy GUI)
-widgets
-flip3d instead of expose
- start-search instead of spotlight
...
