Round the release of the last squarepusher album (can't remember the name, the one with him on the front and Steinbolt was one of the tracks off it), there was an essay by him (I think it was on warp's site) along those lines and he also discussed it on Mary Anne Hobb's radio show. I can see what he's saying, but my view is that a machine is a sort of idiot-savant. It'll do simple tasks very well and very quickly. The "creativity" that comes from working around the limitations of a machine are man-made; after all, when you want to do an odd time signature on a drum machine that doesn't support it, it's you who alters the BPM and spreads the pattern over 2 or three bars, not the machine. It imposes limitations and the creativity is in finding workarounds, which people do. |
