ok, excuse any silliness, but it seems to be time to be drunk.
are groups and group-identity a good or bad thing in your opinion? Now, I'm talking groups in a rather wide sense.. from the smallest gangs of friends to that notion of belonging to a nation. At a quick glance, it would seem that groups are the cause of strife (to have a fight, you need two sides), but it's also so that the majority of groups don't necessarily fight or anything like that...
Nevertheless, if someone managed to make all people on the planet feel they were a part of the same group and of no smaller group (unlikely, but for the sake of an example, and which would render the word "group" obsolete as it wouldn't really be referring to anything, but that aside..), it seems there'd at least be less large-scale fighting.. I don't think even that would make people stop fighting small fights over small things (like drunk people out on town in a disagreement that goes a bit over the top or people who have been cheated by someone, etc), but it seems it would have the power to stop stuff like wars (as there would be no opponent; what would they be fighting?)...
However, is it so that the smaller (as in not-global) group-like structures we have everywhere today actually don't really have any advantages over anything global? I, for one, am against globalisation and homogenisation of.. well, just about anything but milk due to the fact that I believe a critical attitude that is only achieved by social and individual differences.. not that all people belonging to the same group would necessarily be the same as people being less different on an individual level, but I think it is reasonable to say that it would most likely have an impact...
anyway, if any of this makes sense and there really are questions, what do you think?

oh, just ignore it, I'm just bored and tomorrow is like norways constitution day thingie (like 4th of july or whatever) and I hate it 'cause it's just silly and annoying and fucking buekorps that have to make noise and drumming and shit ass cockfucker for months before this because they're "practicing." Oh, look at me, I have to practice beating this drum randomly!
also, I saw some program about some people building a bridge or something and it was in america and for some reason the workers seemed to think they had to plant the american flag every fucking where.. like when they were transporting some beams for the bridge one of them climbed on top of it and planted a flag there like that steel beam was a sign of the superiority of america or something and it was all just silly and that very feeling of national pride is what I think is cause of both national and international shit stirred up in and by america bla bla

Different kinds of energy resources have fundamentally different "qualities". For example, a BTU of oil (oil before it is burnt) is fundamentally different than a BTU of coal. Oil has a higher energy content per unit weight and burns at a higher temperature than coal; it is easier to transport, and can be used in internal combustion engines. A diesel locomotive wastes only one-fifth the energy of a coal-powered steam engine to pull the same train. Oil's many advantages provide 1.3 to 2.45 times more economic value per kilocalorie than coal.
Oil is the most important form of energy we use, making up about 40 percent, or 152 quadrillion Btu, of the world energy supply (DOE, 1998). No other energy source equals oil's intrinsic qualities of extractability, transportability, versatility and cost. These are the qualities that enabled oil to take over from coal as the front-line energy source in the industrialized world in the middle of this century, and these qualities are as relevant today as they were then:
"If one considers the last one hundred years of the U.S. experience, fuel use and economic output are highly correlated. An important measure of fuel efficiency is the ratio of energy use to the gross national product, E/GNP. The E/GNP ratio has fallen by about 42% since 1929. We find that the improvement in energy efficiency is due principally to three factors: (1) shifts to higher quality fuels such as petroleum and primary electricity; (2) shifts in energy use between households and other sectors; and (3) higher fuel prices. Energy quality is by far the dominant factor."
A BTU of sweet oil is fundamentally different than a BTU of sour oil. Sour oil is contaminated with sulfur and requires special refineries with higher energy costs. Some giant oil fields (e.g., Manifa in Saudi Arabia) are "virtually unusable" because they are contaminated with hydrogen sulfide and vanadium (a heavy metal).

I know what you mean about national pride and how it fucks people's judgements about other cultures. But all this nonsense about planting flags everywhere? Who the fuck cares? It's in America, not another country.

planting the flags, no matter where it is, seems to be some sort of ceremony that affirms ones own beliefs that one self and ones nation is awesome and superior and contrary to what one would think (that planting the flag on something unimportant would diminsh the flags power), planting the flag on something unimportant increases the potency of both the flag and the item it is planted on.. or something.

What? Has Norway a flag? Is it flying anywhere? Do you think your country is superior? A flag, I guess, signifies a nation, and often when planted somewhere in that nation, pride in that nation...and unity of it's people. If America wants to plant flags everywhere in IT'S own land, go for it! Why is America lambasted so much? Any Americans want to speak to this?

people need a sense of identity and a sense of belonging. it gives them order, direction and purpose i.e continuing their belief, their kind. groups etc are like a comfort zone. it amazes me that people often think in the concept of 'us and them' when there is far more to it than that. its reassuring, but its most definatley not that black and white.
does that help?

America has a lot to be proud of. And yes, the building of a bridge, no matter how insignificant, brings a sense of pride. Why not put a flag on one of the beams. "We as nation made this"...or something. Pride can be dangerous though.
If your country made it to the moon would you think that they plant a flag?

ok maybe we don't need them but many of us choose to join them for the aforementioned reasons. whilst i can't call it human nature, many people deisre social acceptance and conformity as a means of establishing themselves and their place, and there is a lot of evidence to suggest this.
