Large headsets in public: ridiculous?

I would like to wear my large home style headset outdoors,
with superior sound quality compared to my puny portable
headset.
I'm afraid it might look a bit ridiculous though, walking
around in public with that huge thing on my head.
What's your verdict on this?

I don't use large headset outdoors. My guess is that too
many people use these more as fashion.

i use my large set outdoors on occasion.

i always feel a bit conspicuous when i do. in a way, i
prefer the smaller in-ear phones though. i like being able
to hear the city around me mixed in with the music. feels
more "soundtracky" i guess.

only get so much quality from an MP3 anyway. better phones
are just gonna make you hear that sparkly crunchy mp3
distortion better.

theres nothing wrong with distortion, you little one will
learn that in her many happy long years of life

Braeden slept for an amazing 5 1/2 hours last night.

You're right about fashion being the reason. Proper
hi-fi/DJing headphones invariably sound worse than cheap
ones on an ipod/similar device. 2 Reasons;

1. They more accurately reproduce the sound, so mp3
artifacts are more apparent.

2. Some technical reason that I don't know enough about to
clearly describe, but something to do with different
resistance of high end headphones, which makes them sound
rubbish on anything other than a mixer/hi fi etc. as small
devices seem to lack the "drive" to push the signal round
well.

Also, if they're closed back, it's pretty dangerous to walk
around in public in them; you can't hear traffic, sirens,
people creeping up on you, etc.

You're free to wear whatever headphones you like, but the
only reason that won't make you look a clown, in my book, is
that in-ear bud style headphones are too big for your very
small ears (my girlfriend falls into this category). Even if
that's the case, if you're into your music enough, you could
justify buying some of those pricey Shure in-ear ones that
are made from a mould to fit your ear.

question: in the trash-compactor scene, bra or no bra? I
could've sworn that I could spot some nipple under her
dress. maybe it was just my testosterone-infested mind doing
the thinking

in ear headphones suck really. can't stand them. i've found
a pair of small external clip on headphones are the best
compromise, but if i'm on a long travel, i'd prefer my
'large headphones' and also in winter they keep your ears
warm too.

I don't see the point, you look like a dick for slightly
better sound quality. there is too much noise in the real
world anyway, and its probably a good idea if you can hear
something of the world around you anyway

large headphones with low impedance will also allow you to
properly reproduce the sound without blasting your ears so
that you get tinnitus (which sucks really really bad) like
in-ear headphones do.

Congs to Cecilia !

Braeden did wake up at 3:15am, ate some, then somehow Laura
was back in bed by 3:30am. It was an amazing evening.

On paper it may seem they don't sound as good with portable
players. But my senhiesers make my crappy mp3's sound full
and rich. And as an added bonus the block out the hoards of
shit people around me on the bus, in the streets etc..

If your worried about clunkiness have you thought about 80's
style walkman headphones? probobly a good compremise.

you can get high resolution in-ear monitors which gives you
no excuse to wear bulky headphones in public.

whenever i see people with massive headphones (goths/emos in
gloucester) they always have them round their necks, they
are never actually listening to them. they must be some new
fashion accessory

offline dave_g from United Kingdom on 2006-05-13 06:20 [#01897938]

I wear big headphones for a few reasons:

1) in ear don't fit in my ears. I think my ears are an odd
shape or soemthing. they always fall out

2)I can listen to music with a decent bass response and do
not get tinnitus because of the proximity to eardrum or
volume level required.

3)keeps my ears warm in winter without looking gay with ear
muffs

4) sound quality is better. maybe you can hear more mp3
artifacts, but use a decent encoder/rate and its not a
problem, in ear have no bass, so I'd rather have bass

5)Everyone has in ear, even middle aged business men, be
different.

The number of times people with in ear headphones walk past
with them so loud i can hear them from a few metres away
makes me think that at least with big ones my hearing will
be working unlike theirs in 30 years time.

sure you get better sound quality etc etc. But i personally
don't like wearing my sony studio monitors outdoors for 2
reasons, the weather, and they're expensive. my earbuds
work fine for my ipod, and they still allow noise around me
come through which is good if you are walking around. If i
have those big headphones on its hard to hear when people
are around me...etc
