i just ordered my beast of a laptop.

intel centrino duo 1.83 ghz 637mhz fsb
1024 DDR ram
100gig HD
15.4 inch screen
even got a free printer (not that i wanted it)
all for £688 including delivery.

I don't think i've ever spent so much money, i really
couldn't afford it either. Oh well.

Good spec for the cost. Nice. What sort of soundcard are you
going to run with it? Does it support dual screens (IE can
the monitor you plug into it show stuff other than what
appears on the lappy's own screen?)

aye it supports dual monitors. I havent got a soundcard for
it yet (just onboard for mo) seeing as i couldn't really
affor dthe laptop itself let alone the card i'd like to
get.
Hopefully when im out in Japan making some moolah i will buy
the EMU 1616m but not for a lil while yet.

Nice! Even if you just hook it up to an old CRT, make sure
you at least try using a second monitor. It's amazing how
people have the capability to, but never do. With a
sequencer that lets you spread the display over 2 screens
(Reason works particularly well) it is a much, much quicker
way to work. No clicking between windows all the time; just
sequencer timeline in one, VSTs/fx in the other and away you
go.

i used to do it on my old PC, I had a dual monitor videocard
(which is agp so wont go in the PC i have now) and i had 2
17" monitors. I'd have ableton in one window and floops in
the other. Its hella useful.

Sounds/looks like a good setup. I've not found a way of
getting either floops (FL Studio 5) or Ableton (5) to
actually span 2 screens itself (rather than 1 on each
screen), any idea if that's possible? I think Ableton with
session view on one monitor and arrangement view on the
other would be fantastic.

no i am not sure how to get one spread across both screens,
maybe remove the background from floops and strech the
windows?
its been a while since i had dual monitors so i dont know
and can't experiment.

Nice one. I wish I could order myself up some spanking new
hardware. I think I'll make do with rebuilding my current
PC. It's not old but it needs a clearout. Physically and on
the actual drives.

Yep, I'm doing this too. Once we're moved in, the Gf's PC is
going to be for email/games/word etc. and my PC is going to
be rebuilt purely for music. I mean absolutely bugger all
other than XP and music software. No internet access, no
network, no antivirus, everything unneccessary uninstalled
and all unneccessary services disabled. New software will be
moved across via cd drive (having been virus scanned on the
other machine first) and likewise stuff will be moved off
via CDr.

laptop.

It's a gay shit version of windows. Don't know why they've
given you that on a laptop. Idiots. It's designed for a
media centre so you can record TV etc. It's not a proper
copy of XP. Well it is but it's not for what you want.

FUCK
can you not just turn the media centre bit off? it says its
the same as home but with added extras.

ARGH

i got the mac bug for a month or two but man i hate mac. I'm
not trying to get into the PC/Mac debate, its just not for
me. I've been reading up on media centre edition 2005 and it
seems it should run just like home assuming i don't use the
actual media centre bit, which i most likely wont, although
it might be useful in Japan i dunno yet though. Regardless i
guess i can always downlaod professional and install that
(assuming there are no hardware probs with it being a pre
installed/built system).

Ah, just been trying this again with Floops. Can't work out
why I hadn't done it sooner. Maybe I tried with an earlier
version and it didn't work...

Still, glad I've found it out.

Im pretty sure 'media centre' is XP Home with added bits in
it for playing back media, like a dumbed down interface that
can be used with a remote control or some shit so the
average shmoe can use teh computars for music and films, im
sure you can just ignore it, if not just stick xp pro on.
Anyways, the specs look great, centrino's are where its at.

Dude, if you are thinking about buying Apple, I'd hold on
for a couple of weeks before you order (depending on what
you were going to order)........
