Not sure why I clicked it but it wasn't too yukky. Did you
know sometimes pinworms (thats what these are) get lost and
end up living in the vagina for a while? I learned this
rather disturbing fact not long ago.

how is the inside of an old mans rectum (infested with worms
to top it off) interesting?

i might as usefully ask you why it's not interesting.

the variety and spectacle of living things is inherently
interesting. when the spectacle involves human beings, of
which i am one, the interest is sometimes greater. when the
organism involved is memorably grotesque, the interest is
sometimes greater. when the spectacle is ordinarily hidden
and mysterious, and it then made visible through
technological means, the interest is sometimes greater.

this is my short answer.

well, you answered my question (making the possibly ironic
"usefully" part of that line a bit misplaced) and I can just
as simply answer your

1: It doesn't interest me
2: It's gross
3: it's typical silly "intertainment" of the Coliseum kind.

he probably did not get the worms from "eating something";
rather he probably picked up the eggs on his fingers and
inadvertently ingested them, possibly from contact with an
infected person.

these worms are common throughout the world, and many
children in the united states become infected with them at
some point.

it's not interesting because it doesn't interest you? fair
enough.

it's gross? what are you, a man or a mouse? do you shriek
like a little girl if you find a bug crawling on you?

you're comparing those who take an interest in the miracle
of life and related parasitism to fiends gawking at a
coliseum spectacle? my good man, you have crossed the line!

gross, yes. if that diminishes my manhood in your eyes..
well, that's up to you, but by all those silly "manly"
standards being a man consists in acting stupid, doing
everything the hard way (you're more of a man if what you're
doing is likely to kill you.. women doing what's likely to
kill them are just "crazy").

and, yes, on the internet it is fair to say that
99,9999999999999999999999% of the people to ever see this
video are "at the coliseum."

oh, good god there are far more disturbing creatures than
the lowly pinworm.

south america and africa are positively seething with an
unbelievable array of hideous parasites.

you're mostly in the clear in the us, though. fun fact: the
only way you'll ever get a tapeworm is by swallowing an
adult flea with the baby tapeworm living inside it!

i just dispensed with a tapeworm that was living inside my
recently adopted kitten. cleaning yourself with your tongue
has some very distinct disadvantages.

8 weeks huh? so you're still not sleeping much i suspect.

as a biologist, i find it interesting that there are
organisms that have evolved to be capable of living in such
hostile environments. apparently, the New England Journal
of Medicine found it interesting too.

but that's just me. err... me and the New England Journal
of Medicine.

i'll also add that to me, 'interesting' and 'disgusting' are
often synonymous.

hostile environment? if you don't have a nose, it might not
be so bad. warm, moist, nutrients readily available, decent
weather...a great place to secrete an egg packet and raise
some kids.

I don't know how on earth this google ad got listed on a
thread about pinworms, but frankly, I'm offended. :)

plaidzebra: interesting fun fact... why is the flea
necessary? is that so that the stomach juices dissolve the
flea before they destroy the tapeworm?

you start out with a packet of eggs from a tapeworm, which
breaks off of the adult worm in the intestinal tract of a
host (cat, dog, what have you). each segment of the worm
has an independent digestive and reproductive system, and
the segment at the end of the worm develops into this packet
of eggs and heads for the nearest exit. once out of the
host, the packet of eggs is capable of moving on its own,
and soon dries up and spills the eggs. the eggs are
consumed by flea larvae, and the egg hatches inside the flea
and remains in a larval state as the flea develops into an
adult. when a host swallows an infected adult flea, the
flea is killed and digested and the larval worm develops
into an adult and migrates to the intestines and attaches
itself with circular rows of spiky "teeth."

not surprisingly, there are many varieties of tapeworm and
this is only one type of infection cycle, the one you're
most likely to encounter.

i should mention that your digestive juices cannot kill a
tapeworm. the flea is required to hatch the eggs and
release the larvae (by inadvertently consuming the tapeworm
eggs). lots of parasites require both intermediate and
primary hosts.

great thread (though i didn't check the video).
i'm quite fascinated with parasites of all kind and was glad
to see plaidzebra is into them as well.

i think i have ascariasis.

i heard the best way to get rid of certain 'solitaires' was
to put a small bit of meat (or biscuit) by your anus
everyday at the same time, but not sunday were you trick him
by not placing anything. the first few days it's too shy but
by the end of the week it's all pumped up and ready to dare
take a bite of that twix. of course that's when you grab and
kill it.

another one is dipping your bottom or your face into a huge
bowl of warm milk untill they come out for a lapping.
apparently it used to work in the olden days.

In practice? So you were eating away when you found one of

And did you swallow it (to rescue the girl of your dreams)?
That would be the noble thing to do, of course.
